Getting a new (to me) car soon, suggest thangs
    #19719684 -

Just got a nice promotion at work so it's time to upgrade from my 1998 Jeep Deathtrap into something nicer.

I'm looking at spending >$12,000, getting around $2k for the Jeep and throwing down another 2-3k on top of that for a down payment.

I want a sedan, something relatively fuel efficient. An Impala, Jetta, or Accord would be nice, but I'd also love to have an Audi A4 or a BMW 328i that's a few years old.

So let's hear it, what should I get? What would you get in my situation?

Also, I have decent credit and a good bit of disposable income.

Love the A4, long term reliability is definitely a concern though when buying luxury preowned, and Lexus and BMW tend to have the best ratings in that aspect.

I would never own an Italian car, even if I had the money.

Don't be an idiot.  Vehicle requirements vary greatly based on where you live.  By the way I live in Larchmont NY.  4 wheel drive has an appeal here that it might not have in, oh, say, San Diego.

For sure...
I'm looking for a new car, but mpg is paramount.
So a 4 cylinder Civic or a Hyundai was appealing to me...

The smart thing to do would be to get a camry or accord. Good on gas, run forever, and pretty quick if you get a v6 model.

Ok bro. Go to the dealership the last day of the month. Tell them nothing about the jeep (trade in) or down payment. Find something you like to have but show no emotion about is, you have the ability to walk away and don't be afraid to do it. If you find a car you like you can go to other dealerships to see if they have them and work a deal with them too. Anyway last day of the month. When you sit down with the salesman we used a four square system. 1 price of the car 2 down payment 3 trade in value 4 monthly payment.

Again, the last day of the month these boys want to make a quota, Personally and for the store so they will be more likely to work a deal. Say nothing about your trade in or down payment. When they tell you the price of the car haggle them down as much as possible, don't worry about the payment and when they won't go any lower act like you will walk out. Some will have a manger come talk to you, this is called a turn. When you get to a price you like tell them you want to trade in you jeep (payed off assuming) check the blue book price for a personal sale and try your best to get that.

When you get what you want for your jeep tell them to deduct that from the already low price of your car. Then give them your down payment and have them take that off as well. Now once you do that you monthly payment will already be low conceding you fucked them I the price I the car. When you go to financing only get the gap insurance fuck all the window etching and shit, who steals cars besides special ed? Gap will pay you can off if you total it if not you will have to pay for a car that won't move. Hope this helps, let me know how it turns out...

So.... Let's say I want a 12000 car...
Let's also say I have no credit or bad credit, but have 10000 to put down.
Would they be likely to take one if they're putting that much down (for their loan)

Wow, ten grand to put down you could buy a really new/nice car. If you had six grand to put down that would buy you a 12000 car easy, even with no credit. I would say find out how little you would need to put down first, then decide how little you want your monthly payments to be

i use my truck to carry lots of shit.  last summer i made 4 HUGE raised bed gardens.  just filled my box with black soil and brought it home.

cant do that in no car

Unless u dont home renos or construction/carpentry or pull boats or campers they aren't needed.  they ARE harder on gas then a 4 banger car for sure
