Ever sold your car?
    #2530550 - 04/06/04 05:23 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I need some cash and I need to liquidate some assets. The most obvious one is my car- a 1997 Nissan Maxima. It's a nice car in very good shape and I HATE to do this! I love my car!

I don't know shit about selling cars. Should I sell it to a dealer or put an ad in the paper? What techniques should I use to get the best price possible?

check out www.kbb.com

it's called the kelly blue book and it should help you find the value of your car. a kelly blue book listing is pretty respected. print out your page that you end up with and then call around dealerships. you may be able to get more out of a private sell, but sometimes that can be hard. find the value of your car and stick with it..try not to get lowballed. or just drive around with a for fat 'for sale' sign in the window and you'll probably get a call. it's not an easy business. you gotta make it look like you've got the deal.

I've already checked the Kelly Blue Book price and I spoke to a used car dealer. He seemed to suggest that dealers offer less generally than a private party. But this is all new to me so I don't know how these things work.

that's right, see, a dealership isn't going to buy your car if they don't think they can make any money off of selling it themselves.

some average joe looking for a nice clean car may give you top dollar and maybe even more than it's worth, just because he may not know any better. it all depends really. i'm no expert though..

Lets say I find a private buyer and he agrees to pay 6,000$ for it. I guess he pays with check- do I need to drive by his house or something and confirm he is who he says he is and wont flee to Mexico or something? I just dont have any experience with this kind of thing.

Whatever you do, do not sell it to a dealer. You will surely get ripped off.

You could start by putting it in the paper and magazines. Putting it on the internet also helps...

dont follow the blue book...its way off the market price. My car on there is like 1800 but i can sell it in a day for 10k.

Look through www.autotrader.com and compare yours to tothers then price it. use autotrader even. they run your ad till it sells

Well do you really think a used car seller will give you more than someone whos searching a car for himself? That doesnt make any sense.
I say put an ad somewhere

when i bought my car, i had cash. so the owner and i went to his bank and we deposited all the cash in the bank. then, you take the title and transfer it over to his name. that should be about it. you could also call the dmv. i'm not too sure about every little detail though. it seems once you transfer the title and get a signature, that's it.

If I lived by you, Id buy it for 6-8g's (depends on milage and condition)

It is a 97 Nissan Maxima w/95,000 miles on it, very good condition althought there are a few tiny rust spots and a couple of tiny dings if you look close- the paint still shines, the interior is in very good conditon and it runs very well.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I will definately NOT sell it to a dealer.

If your going to just sell it to a dealer ship and not trade it, expect 4-6k back of book, and for a 97 Maxima unless its in perfect shape with all options thats quite a bit.

97 Maxima perfect shape, fully loaded, with under 50k miles can go for 8-10G's.

Then they'll offer him 4,500-5,500 if its flawless maybe as much as 6,500.
