Is it no longer common to see lobsters in tanks at grocery stores? * 1
    #19682114 -

I was daydreaming about food and started thinking about lobster and crawfish.  I know quite a few places to get fresh crawfish from, but when I was racking my brain over where to find lobster I came to the realization that I haven't seen a lobster tank in a grocery store or supermarket in years.

I remember as a kid I was fascinated by those sea bugs and whenever my mom took me food shopping with her I'd go find the lobsters and observe their arthropodous glory.  I wanted one as a pet around the age of 7, but I wasn't allowed to have pets so visiting the lobsters next to deli departments had to suffice.

Where did they go?  Do I just not shop in places that have them anymore?  Did keeping living crustaceans out in the view of the customer fall out of fashion or something?  Is it just no longer considered economical to have live lobsters in grocery stores?

I started work as a meat cutter around when the live lobsters disappeared (we always did seafood in the stores too) and it all boils down the economic viability like you said. Jes cain't sell 'em  THANKs ObAMMA

I've been to a couple asian markets that had them still but no don't think it's as common as it used to be.

Yeah I don't suppose I saw many people purchasing lobsters from those tanks.  Stores had to be losing money on the idea for years.

Last place I saw a lobster tank was this cool little asian restaurant a friend of mine worked at some years ago.

Same, only seen them in Asian restaurants. I have seen this Asian place sell them for only $5.99 a pound, what a steal!

I went to a really nice restaurant in NYC once when I was little. They had live HUGE lobsters in this big tank. When you order one you get to go pick out which one you want. Then they remove it and cook it. It was the best lobster I've ever had. Very pricey though, I think it was like $250 per plate

I can't say I've ever been in the position to be able to spend $250 on a meal and think nothing of it.  How was the lobster prepared?

Probably steamed with lemon and butter, I'm guessing. I'm hoping for $250 a plate they jazzed it up and served something that was unique to their own style though.

Personally I think shellfish is served the best cold and raw. Clams, oysters, mussels, lobster... definitely the best raw and served cold.

It's possibe to serve lobster like sushi? I've been a sushi addict for close to 15 years now and have never seen lobster as a option. Seems like it would be pretty damn delicious

The only grocery stores I have seen this at recently are Chinese grocery stores. One had live fish too. I don't shop at the fancy grocery stores though.

Yeah I'm right there with you, trying to imagine the taste of uncooked lobster.  I wonder what the texture is like.  Personally I think it would be unpleasant relative to the taste, but that's just speculation on my part.

I have them in my grocery store:shrug:. Lords knows I would hate to cook it though. I think most people don't like boiling things alive that scream.
That's why God made red lobster:tongue:

You just have to go to better stores. I see them everywhere:
Harris Teeter, Fresh Market, Whole Foods, World Market, Costco...

Yes, that's clearly why god made Red Lobster.  Where do you live, where lobster tanks still exist?

A few stores around me(Giant Eagle, etc..) still have them.

I used to always watch them and be intriqued when I was a kid too.

They seem to sell alright... We usually buy some a few times a year. Every father's day they're buy one get one free or some shit so we always buy them and make 'em for my dad.
