Marijuana Symposium * 1

I'm presenting a research poster for a Marijuana event at my school, and there's lots of prize money for the top poster. If the shroomery helps me out and I win some $, I'll donate it all to a charity of y'alls choosing :pipesmoke:

I figure everyone is going to be doing the benefits of it, why it should be legal etc, so I'm focusing on the harmful effects of it. Being a pothead for a while at one point, and having many friends who have and are, I've seen that it's not a benign drug like many people preach it to be. Also, I've learned the most about drugs from the shroomery :awesome:



Some topics I'm thinking about addressing

-Latent schizophrenia

-Damage on young, developing brains

-Long term cardiovascular damage

-Personality changes


Any topic suggestions, credible articles about effects of marijuana, or general advice would be much appreciated!

My cousin became schizopheric partly because of marijuana.

He was smoking blunt after blunt at the age of 16. Then his father beat on him.

He developped schizophrenia soon after

I am only schitzophrenic while ON weed.

once I sober up I am fine but I can see (and HAVE SEEN) how being high can trigger an episode lasting longer than the high.

Marijuana can't make you schizophrenic, it can only bring out latent schizophrenia.


Diacetylol, what do you mean you're schizophrenic on weed? What symptoms do you obtain?

Instead of just going with negative impacts of abuse, I'm going to make it about the effects of marijuana abuse in general. Good and bad.

One phenomenon I am aware of is that if you smoke a whole lot for a period of time -- multiple times per day, every day -- and then stop suddenly, and quit cold turkey, you're very likely to get extremely depressed.  This depression can be quite severe and can last for quite awhile.

High and Diace, have you ever tried smoking a predominantly CBD strain with low THC? Results?

Depression isn't really a mood disorder/brain retardation, it goes away on it's own after 3-6months...

I honestly don't see any downsides to pot besides use of it on a developing brain (before 24), but a developing brain that is not being used is far worse.

You don't see severe clinical depression for three to six months as a downside?

I've read medical articles saying that suicide is not uncommon during this period.  And you just write it off?  I think this is precisely the kind of non-benign stuff talked about by the OP.

Using Marijuana for most people will yield zero downsides in my experience.

However, abusing it  can be quite detrimental (mostly psychologically rather than physically). This is all anecedotal, but for instance my buddy has developed a dependency for marijuana. He has to be high to do anything whether it's going to school, working out, watching tv, listening to music etc. Pretty much 24/7 high. His social functioning has diminished severely, and worse yet he's delusional about it. He thinks it makes him a social butterfly, but it's quite the opposite. He now has a very hard time expressing himself, he's paranoid all the time in regards to marijuana (he asks several times an hour if his room/house smells like weed, even if we're alone at his place we have to be in his room with the door locked, if we're outside he'll imagine a cop siren and hightail it inside).
It promotes laziness and apathy, which I've experienced in myself and many other chronic smokers. He's not doing well in his classes and has just become quite weird in general.

I think he may be developing schizophrenia, he shows many of the early warning signs for it. I don't know if I should bring that up to him or not... Also, I've known him since I was very young so I've seen the definite shift in who he was and who he is now over many years.

The most common early warning signs of schizophrenia include:

    Social withdrawal- Yes
    Hostility or suspiciousness- Yes
    Deterioration of personal hygiene-No
    Flat, expressionless gaze-Often
    Inability to cry or express joy-No
    Inappropriate laughter or crying- Laughter Yes
    Depression-N/a
    Oversleeping or insomnia- yes
    Odd or irrational statements- Quite often
    Forgetful; unable to concentrate- yes
    Extreme reaction to criticism- Horribly So
    Strange use of words or way of speaking- Yup


My point is just that marijuana is not benign. And this is just one example.
I think a lot of people see MJ as harmless because it doesn't kill you or create imminent physical/health problems like say cigarettes, alcohol or hard illegal drugs like meth. But it can be very mentally damaging.

it doesn't "decrease" Dopamine with use, rather it raises Dopamine levels which in turn causes the brain to under regulate Dopamine receptors after ceasing use, which leads to down regulation and therefore less Dopamine afterwards

I smoke daily.

the hallucinations are legit though and its in my family history.

I don't mind it though, weed is like a trip everytime for me. at least until I peak then it smooths out.

This whole schitzo scare is blown way out of proportion. A gut feeling tells me lsd has more cases of inducing psychosis of any kind. Yet I dont hear pubbers bitching about the tabs they just bought because they KNOW its real acid because like.. The taste man. They know what pure lsd tastes like maaaaaan
