Dancing...a thread all about it. * 1
    #19487469 -

Only in recent years have I started to thoroughly enjoy dance. The act of moving myself about is one thing, but even watching another person dance brings me an immense amount of joy (so as long as they have some flow to their moves :smirk: ). Watching another person dance, I can feel every move they make course through out my body, trickle down my spine and radiate out through my limbs...each little movement I see is picked up on and reflected by my mirror neurons, vicariously feeling and experiencing the movement of that person as if it was my own body. I can become very entranced by watching the movement of another.

One of my favorite things to do while at festivals is taking a step back to just observe folks dancing. Either one individual, or observing and taking in the deluge of movement of the entire dance area as a single organism. One thing I've noticed is the influence one particular person, or several, will have on the entire dance floor or a large portion of it. I'll notice one particular "movement" start at a point of the dance area, and literally radiate outward influencing the movement of everyone's bodies, like a flock of birds or a school of fish. Now of course everyone has their own style and gig going on, and some are completely off in their own world, but this is something I've observed many times.

Of course the music itself is the primary influence of movement, so that's obviously playing a huge role in what I'm seeing as well....but that's another interesting observation, noticing how certain pieces of music induces similar movements in everyone, even if everyone has their own unique style of dance going on, their dance-movements are still influenced by the music in a similar fashion as everyone else.

I used to never understand why or how people would get so much pleasure from dancing, I always thought it was such a silly thing and had no interest in it...I was quite rigid in my body, I could easily bob my head to the beat, but beyond that my body essentially felt "locked up" and rigid, I had no clue as to how I should be moving my body. Over the years, and after some lsd & mdma :smirk:, and after finding music I mesh to, that's changed. Now I don't think I can dance all that great, but what's changed is me not giving any fucks, and as a result my body isn't so locked up and rigid anymore, and I don't even have to think of how I should be moving my body, that shit just flows out....I become no more than a marionette, and the music is the puppeteer .

My movements while dancing pretty much correlates to the movement, shapes, and texture I feel/see/experience from music. My dance is essentially the result of a synaesthesia like flow, originating from sound, processed into to abstract movement/texture/shape by my mind, then an outflow into physical movement of my body. I find it to be very meditative, while dancing I completely slip into the now, no thoughts trickling through my mind, no nothing, just music permeating the air and giving rise to movement.

The shit I live for in life, straight up, is those moments of being under the stars, surrounded by trees, immersed in thick warm & fuzzy bass filled air, with a bunch of beautiful faces and smiles all around, locking eyes and exchanging smiles with complete strangers. Bliss....

Anyway...I can go on and on rambling off into all sorts of tangents.

This thread is to share & discuss anything related to dance, videos of folks dancing, why you're stoked and hyped on dancing, or why you don't like it, etc etc...

I need the right type of music to actually get into it.
I dance when i'm the only one around usually, this is because either i'm too cramped to express my self, or i end up getting to enthusiastic and hit people accidentally.
I look ridiculous too, my friends don't like it, and most people laugh at me.

There's nothing that can compare to a good old stomp.

Dancing is something that I've only recently (last few years) began to enjoy too but it's really brought a whole new dimension to my life. I'm a big fan of dancing without shoes, be it dirt, mud or grass.

Dance is something that almost everyone could do with more of. Traditionally there was no separation between it and music and now we listen to music where we sit down, still, in concert halls for hours on end.

Of course some music encourages dancing far more than other music, and there are completely different approaches for different styles too.

i really like dancing but i mostly only do it alone in my apartment. i'll dance at parties or whatever but i can feel myself holding back. someone did compliment my moves at a party once though. also i find it harder to dance to music that i don't like, which is about the only thing clubs play.

i've considered taking a class just to have fun and dance with a group. i should look into it. i used to go to zumba and that was really fun, but then a new teacher took over and it became less dancey and more mechanical and aerobic. boo.

Yeah I'm definitely at my most free when dancing alone in my room. I'm hoping I can bring more of that out though as I build confidence/give less fucks.

Yee...In more recent times I've found my self movin' about and dancing even when there is no music playing and while stone sober.

Kratom is one of my favorite things to dance on though, outside of LSD and/or mdma.

Alcohol will loosen me up for surely and I've gigged while buzzed, but I feel very disconnected from my body and uncoordinated. Speaking of which, I don't understand how some folks can gig while on K, a teeny tiny bit is cool, but there's a fine line where I lose coordination in my movements.

Back a few years, around 2008, dubstep was what got me into even considering letting my body move around  ...but it was only in the past year or two that I've really loosened up and found more music that I mesh with.

Same here...there's a lot of music I dig listening too, and hearing live, but it takes a certain something to get my body to move. And there's plenty of music I won't ever listen to just to listen, but it will get me moving if it's being pushed from a proper sound system.

I pretty much never go to shows or places where it's going to be cramped to the point I can't move around as I would like to, just not worth it to me, and this is why I like outdoor events because there's tons of room....I see pictures from some shows & things and the places look really crammed and packed, I don't see how people could actually dance around.

And aye, who cares how ridiculous you look...there's absolutely no proper way to dance, haters gonna hate.

:werd:

It has for me as well. I have a friend that also prefers to dance with out shoes. I gave it a shot while at a festival last year, I started shedding some clothes while in my tent to cool off for a moment, and decided to leave my shoes and go back to the dance area with naked feet. As soon as I got up to the stage I couldn't hang and had to go back and put them on , it was pretty damn cold out, but the ground/dirt felt considerably warmer around the dance area. I dig walking around barefoot, but at the time it just wasn't happening.

Agreed....there's so many aspects to it that bring nothing but goodness. From the obvious of getting physical activity, but also letting go and letting everything flow out in a cathartic sorta way, expending bottled up internal non-sense, sharing that space and time with other beings, a tuning and improved acuity of the mind & senses...it's something that's very therapeutic for me, recharging, refreshing, and cleansing for the mind/body/soul . After night of dancing in a warehouse, or a weekend in a forest with non-stop music and lots of dancing, I feel high as shit, blissful, and like I'm vibrating for quite a while after.

Get out of the clubs and find yourself some underground shin digs or outdoor festivals, or where ever your preferred flavor of music is played.

I won't do any more than a head bob to the beat, if that, if I'm not feeling the music.

I definitely don't hold back at all while in my room. I'm usually a bit up tight for a while when first stepping into the dance area at festivals and what not, but once I'm loosened up physically and mentally, and feeling the music, once one particular song grabs me, from there on everything just flows. I've recently found my self being able to let it all go much more easily while around a bunch of others at a festival. MDMA helps a lot , and is what really got things going for me in that department, but it is not required at this point for me to let go . I do love dancing on it though.

I hate when I have no room to dance, it completely kills my vibes.  I go out to shows for the purpose of dancing!  It's so frustrating when a venue overbooks their capacity and its just a huge shitshow.  I went to a dark star orchestra concert earlier last year and ended up leaving early because I had no room to move.  Was such a dissapointment.

I find myself dancing to so many different types of music, i just cant help but let the music flow through me.  Once you stop Giving a Fuck about what the people around you think and just let loose, thats when you have the time of your life.  And once you do let go, you'll find that you were judging yourself more harsh than the people around you do.

I love the quote about the music being the puppetmaster and you the marrionette, I think I may put it in my sig. :sun:

For the longest time, and it still does to a certain extent, mdma would just puddle me down and make me want to chill and listen to the music rather than dance, I mean I'd want to dance but would be entirely too content with where I was to move anywhere . Not so much any more, I still dig just relaxing and laying about while on mdma, but there's much more of an urge to move & groove around, like I can't help it.

I hear ya...I've been to a few venues in SF that seem to sell tickets over capacity, which is a bummer when there's a terrific line up and other artists/painters there that I dig. I'll usually find a nook or cranny to dance, but outside of that it's way too fucking crowded to enjoy my self...constantly getting bumped into.

Well said :yesnod:...and so very true, where once one can let go they'll find out they were the ones judging themselves the most all along....I didn't learn how to dance, I just stopped giving a shit, and all of a sudden there was nothing there holding back what wanted to come out in the first place.

I love dancing, its probably my favorite thing to do when listening to really good live music.  I wish more people weren't self concious about it, its about having fun not looking awesome.  Not to say looking good is a bonus, but if you dancing solely to look good you are a toolbox.  Its expressing yourself through the music, and everyone should try to do it.  Some assholes might judge, but they aren't the people that should matter.
