However, one of my old houses had a high stairwell and my ferret (I had just the older one at the time) never decided to leap off. He was not allowed to free roam at this point, but sometimes he got out of my room.

Still though, not worth the risk. My current stairwell has no "balcony" at the top, so they just bound up and down the stairs at their leisure.

The bell on the harness is a great idea. Also a good way to find a ferret is to find their favorite squeaky toy and make some noise with it. It brings both of my ferrets running, even from a dead sleep :lol:


Once when my dad was watching bear for me, he let him run for a bit until he heard a very loud thump. He got up to see what it was and he saw a very startled looking bear on the floor under the balcony. He was fine though, we don't know if he jumped or bumped something, but if he fell I suppose he's just indestructible. I always use the squeaky toy idea. Haha. It will stop him in his tracks and he will turn around and look all over for the toy so he can hide it under the couch again. I often wonder how ferrets ever survived in the wild before they became domesticated. Evolution just doesn't allow animals that jump from 20 foot heights. Haha.

Yeah dude, they are pretty indestructible IME...though I don't try to test that theory :rolleyes:

I had to put child-locks on the cabinets that are within their reach...without them, they will get into one cabinet, climb up to the top shelf, then push the drawer above out. Then they get into the drawer and end up on top of the counter, eating whatever might be available. Then they jump five feet to the ground.

As for squeakies, oh man, my older one especially, he is SO defensive of this squeaky little giraffe. He comes out, looks super indignant, and rips it out of my hand, only to deposit it in a corner three feet away.  Then...he guards it for a minute and gives me the stare-down :rofl:

The older one is on top, the little one is the squished one sleeping below :bunnyhug:

haha awesome, they look peaceful

i got to play with a ferret that my friend in middle school had for a while (might still have her actually) and it was very funny to watch play, they are super energetic

Oh yeah, that's how they sleep in their hammock, in a pile :smile:

They are uncaged 24/7 unless they need a punishment or if it is not safe for them to be out. And even still they go in that cage and pile into that hammock and sleep for hours.

I'm just worried about what is going to happen when my older one passes on. Ferrets only live six or seven years and my little one, he's bonded with the older one pretty hard. For example, when they are separated (say one needs to be caged as a punishment), the other will beg to go wherever the other one is. They even chew on their cage bars in defiance.

It's a dilemma I'm trying to figure out. Ferrets sometimes starve themselves when they get depressed, and losing a friend is often a trigger for that :frown:

Since this has moved to another forum...

My ferret snuck into a forbidden room, tumbled into a dry sump pump basin, then couldn't get out, so he crawled into the weeping tile tube that runs around the foundation of my house. We had a plumber stick a $15,000 camera down there, and he was 40' in, terrified and shivering in the dark and unable to turn himself around. Suffice to say, I was beside myself with horror and grief. Poking him just made him more scared. I dug a 5' hole through the frozen damn ground trying to get to him, and I gave up from physical exhaustion. I thought he was a goner \ going to have to hang myself. BUT...I left a radio in the basin and he backed his furry butt out all on his own, crawled out, and fell asleep in my laundry. When I found him, the last time I felt that elated was a kid on christmas morning.

Yeah .. Ferrets. :heart::shrug:

wow thats sad man hopefully the little one can somehow understand that everyone lives and then dies

what if you got another ferret before the older one passes so that your younger one right now will have a buddy to go on with?

Holy shit man, I don't even know what I'd do.

My ex-wife, she left the back door unlocked one day and I was still sleeping upstairs...a heavy wind caught the door and blew it open, and my older guy, the only ferret at the time, got out.

I lost it. I looked in every single sleep spot he had and shook a bag of treats around. I'd never had a ferret get out before. I assumed the worst, but then I found his squeaky giraffe toy...and sure enough, I squeezed it in the back yard until his little face poked out from under the porch. He was covered in dirt...he had been burrowing a hole under there, probably having the time of his life. His face was completely brown :rofl:

I almost had a heart attack that day. Ferrets...yeah :heart:

That's what I'm thinking...but there's two things.

One, my older one had only cats to associate with before I got the younger. So I think he was ready to have a new friend. Most older ferrets don't much like young ones, I was surprised how quickly they took to each other.

Two, wouldn't that perpetuate this cycle? I feel like if I do that, I should get two ferrets and hope I can acclimate them to the other in a good amount of time.

And then, when should I do it? When my oldest might get jealous towards the end of his life, or when the younger is grieving the older?

I don't know. It's a really big issue on my mind.

yea you have some good points, especially what you said about how it might perpetuate the cycle and the issue of how the 2 you have now would adjust to having a 3rd ferret around, maybe you should wait till the older one passes and see how the young reacts and then look into getting him a new friend

Here's what I'd do frank, get a big ferret so he will be dominant over the two ferrets you have now. They won't team up on him cause he's big, and he won't hurt them cause they've got backup! It's a win win, they have no choice but to accept him.

Check craisglist for new pets, there's a lot of people trying to get their ferrets to a new home. It also doesn't support marshals farm that way.
