John Cage: the worlds longest song
    #4070703 - 04/19/05 12:13 AM (16 years, 27 days ago)

I hardly like anything by John Cage, but this song was interesting. It will take 639 years to play this song, and it has already begun. The title, is "Slow as Possible". here is the link

Slow as Possible

so he did it so what? does it sound good at normal speed?
i bet i couldbeat his song, i call it the Rhapsody in 4 cords, it doesnt end it just plays the same four cords over and over again. it started when they invented nthe guitar, and its still playing today. and will be long after people lose interest in "slow as possible" but then so will 2005...

What's the point of playing this song for 639 years? that's the most retarded thing I've ever heard.

Hmm you have to ask yourself, if they're playing that piece that slow, would it still be music? Or just noise...

I say noise.

that was Cage's point, that everything is music. He has this song 4'33, which is 4 minutes and 33 seconds of silence, which is even written down, and was performed in front of an audience.

I dont like some of the stuff he did, but he had a point, which was just pushing art to one extreme. One of my favorite ideas of his, was a peice he sold on cassette tape, which had an erase head after the play head, so that you could only listen to the song once, that was the way it was to be taken.

He also has serious and real melodic compositions, he was a very talented composer, then went a little askew on chance music and aural existentialism.

an experiment on the perception of space/time on music. the church that has the bells play the song has an automated rig to play the music into the next several centuries - provided that nothing bad happens. Can you imagine the final note? Now, that is projecting yourself into the future.

John Cage was a visionary.

The great thing about that one is it's not the silence that is the song. It's the whispering and coughing and general discomfort of the audience which is the real music. Very Kaufman-esque if you ask me.

sounds interesting. I'm not sure why but I kinda like those artists who take something we've all done like slowing or speeding up music and doing it to a point where is completely new... that guy who made the large pencil and some other things is another example.

also just think how big that file would be if u were gonna download it.

Mahayana Buddhist tradition tells how Buddha lived on one hemp seed a day.
This was enough to sustain him during the six steps of asceticism leading to his Enlightenment.
In recent centuries, higher doses have been favoured.
