My damn ferret

So I just got my glovebox all set and ready to go, whiped down with bleach, all the materials clean and I had just sanitized my hands with some alcohol. I get to swabbing an agar plate with spores courtesy Bodhisatta(thanks again!) and I look over to see my ferret half way out of his cage. At that moment I had to decide if I wanted to finish my work, or keep my ferret from wrecking my room. I chose to finish my work and fortunately I got bear, my ferret, back in his cage before any damage was caused. I see so many funny stories about cats sleeping in monotubs or something on here, I just felt like adding my ferret story :grin:

Haha. They're the best. The little fucker likes to escape when I don't play with him, and he fucks up my bedroom. I set my old phone on a box after I got my new phone, and I haven't seen it sense he got out several months ago. I find it so cool that the shroomery attracts the same types of people. Exotic animal lovers, brewers, distillers. No wonder I love it here so much!

That's awesome, be sure to give them shoes, crinkly bags, and squeaky balls to play with. They'll likely all find their way under a couch in several minutes.

I have two ferrets, they are such little brats.

I have to toddler-proof my house, basically. And make sure everyone knows to put their drinks out of reach when they leave the room.

The younger ones always like to bite the shit out of me everyone, but once they hit 3 or 4 years old, they turn into affectionate little lovers. I adore them :love:

I've only heard that ferrets are stinky, not sure if true.

I'm not responsible enough to care for another being right now, but I think one day in the future I'd like to have an Australian Cattle Dog.

They're stinky if you don't change their litter, feed them good food, and bathe them regularly.

My house smells great, it's just about taking care of them properly.

No way frank! You own ferrets too! And yeah, they don't stink, they're a little musty and it gets worst if you bathe them too often cause their skin dries out, but it's not unpleasant at all. Unfortunetly though, Bear's last owner sold him to me with fleas and I've been trying to get rid of the little shits ever sense, but that's the dirtiest thing about him.

Yep, my little one (1.5yrs) is currently playing chase with my orange kitty.

My orange cat hisses and growls at him, but he loves being chased around. The ferret just nips his back legs a little too hard sometimes :lol:

And yeah, I make sure I give them no more than two baths a month. Honestly, they only need one every month or so. And the smell is on them, but never around the house. I run a pretty clean ship over here though, so that can't hurt.

I'm sure a lazy ferret owner who takes piss-poor care of their ferret would notice a stink in their home. Then they spread the rumor that ferrets are stinky, I think it's bullshit though. Dogs stink if you don't bathe them too :shrug:

Exactly! My little bear just turned 1 in November so he's still wild and crazy too. Personally I like the smell of Bear, it's a little comforting since he's so damn adorable, especially when he yawns. The only smell problems I've gotten from him come from not cleaning up his waste when I'm too bogged down for a few days, but even that's not as bad as when I owned rats :puke:

We've been best buddies for a long time. Is your ferret a solo ferret, just living with you?

I lived with my older one since he was 2.5 months. It's interesting because he has bonded to me like my younger ferret has bonded with him.

I heard that introducing an older and younger ferret can be problematic, but they get along great, since they first met, no problems at all. I can't think of a single fight where they drew blood.

I would recommend getting a second ferret before too long if your ferret is solo. My older guy, while he has a really close bond with me, is totally in love with the younger guy. They do everything together, it's really cool. They are very social animals and when they get older, they tend to crave the companionship of another ferret.

Yep, he's solo for now. I might get him a friend one day since I've heard all sorts of stuff just like what you say your two are like, but for now I just don't have the time or money and it would be cruel to both of them if I couldn't spend enough time to care for them, or if I had to start getting them shitty marshals brand food. I can't even imagine Bear ever hurting anyone, he can barely put up a fight against a slipper. Haha. He's by far the most interesting animal I have ever had the pleasure to care for, and that's really saying something.

Yeah dude, I hear that. Just remember that a lone ferret is not the way it is naturally, if you're in a good spot then you will love the experience of owning two ferrets. I can't help but smile when I get up in the morning to two little critters, either begging me for their morning treat or wrestling like crazy. And they don't ever sleep by themselves.

My older guy is real docile with me and people, but he sure can kick the little one's ass :lol:

Yeah, I'd really love two, but I can't see it working out well for me or the ferrets. Lol, that's funny. I experimented with letting him free roam, but he gets into way too much shit. I also have some scorpions, tarantulas, and until a couple weeks ago a bufo toad. If he were to get into those cages they could kill him. He also likes to look through the rails on my second floor down to the first floor which is terrifying. I just cannot trust him on his own in my house, so he's in his cage when I'm gone, but I get him out and play with him when I'm home whenever I can. I found a bell attached to his harness really helps keep track of him. Hahaha.

Ah, yeah, the old "no sense of distance" thing is sorta true...ferrets will jump from stupid heights if they are allowed to. I don't know if they would jump from so high up to kill them, but I've seen my guys leap from countertops six or seven feet up with no regard for life or limb :facepalm:

However, one of my old houses had a high stairwell and my ferret (I had just the older one at the time) never decided to leap off. He was not allowed to free roam at this point, but sometimes he got out of my room.

Still though, not worth the risk. My current stairwell has no "balcony" at the top, so they just bound up and down the stairs at their leisure.

The bell on the harness is a great idea. Also a good way to find a ferret is to find their favorite squeaky toy and make some noise with it. It brings both of my ferrets running, even from a dead sleep :lol:
