    #1934231 - 09/20/03 12:33 AM (20 years, 6 months ago)

Why is the RH in my terrarium so low? There is 8 qt.'s of damp parlite at the bottom with water and h202. Its been in there for hours already. and the RH is only around 65.. I sprayed some water on the sides of the chamber... what am i doing wrong.. there is nothing in there but parlite

Honestly I would say your hygrometer is wrong - unless you have like a draft going through your terr I would say you are probably fine. My friends doesn't even use a hygrometer anymore and it's all good.

Theres a good inch or two of parlite.. There is a filter on the side of the starlite tub for air echange but who I bought it from said it will keep the humidity in.. and I have vinyl weather strips on the lid to keep the Humidity in.. For the RH to be high does the temp need to be high cuz it seemed pretty cold in the chamber

Cold water was used when h20 was added to the parlite in the chamber

This doesn't technically help you calibrate it, just tells you if it's completely off at 75%RH. I would say you are alright, the RH will actually be higher the lower the temperature goes for the same amount of moisture moving around in the air. It is actually wrong to say warm air "holds" more water, it has to do with vapor pressure or something. I think the bottom line is, you are most likely just fine for cakes in there, your setup sounds like it would produce the right amount of humidity.

Here, read this, this was given to me by Anno when I was a noob,

Then even better - definitely don't stress about RH then, I'm sure it's fine.

Agreed. Your fruiting chamber sounds good and the RH should go up when you actually put something in it, like a casing or cakes. Maybe you can stick a bubbler underneath the perlite, and get some nice air exchange going?
