Melatonin
    #19254490 - 12/10/13 09:31 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Anyone takes melatonin?
Before taking it I researched a bit and found that not only it helps you rest completely during sleep, but it also boosts your ability to keep things in memory.
Now I was taking it for two weeks, then had I quit it, just wanted to see if I will get enough of sleep without it. But I started having some sort of withdrawal.
I would randomly wake up during night and had hard time getting asleep again. I also would not feel rested after waking up in the morning, I started having crazy dreams too.

Anyone experienced similar thing?
I also searched the web for side effects of the drug and found out that not much is really know about melatonin, only that it regulates your sleep cycle. Any thoughts?

Yea, same thing happens to me.

Melatonin is produced in your brain every evening so if you abstain yourself from supplements after taking some for a couple of weeks your brain will think it will receive more melatonin so it produces less and that's why you don't sleep well. It only lasts a couple of days though.

At least, that's how I think it works.

I've taken it once or twice, I don't want to take it too often because I'm worried I'd become dependent on it to sleep.
Let me know if your melatonin levels end up re-balancing themselves after a few nights of not being on it. Hopefully everything will go back to normal.

I got stuck in a dream and couldnt wake up no matter how hard I tried.  Bizarre shit man.  I havnt taken it since.  I should give it a try again.

It has a pretty interesting history, if youre not familiar

I think it works poorly as a sleeping agent because of the withdrawal.. and tolerance... I suggest sleeping as dark as possible.. nice dreams though.

H&M give kratom a go.  A few grams before bed and a hot shower I imagine would work quite nicely.

Yeah sometimes I take it just for the dreams. They are vivid!

Seems like my sleep cycle is back to normal now. Took about one week to recover.

Amanita, what's history behind melatonin? Also about kratom, isn't it on the same shelf as opium? In other words highly addictive?

Aren't all dreams real? It's only when you wake up you can tell that it was a dream.

I've been taking melatonin nightly for almost 2 years. I guarantee that taking it this long has probably affected my sleep cycle semi-permanently.

But I have not experienced any tolerance to it, and the same dose works just as well as it did when i started. I sleep great almost every night, and I don't see any reason I would discontinue its use. Although messing up the natural production of hormones in your brain is an awful thing to do, having consistent deep sleep every night has led me to the healthiest mentally and physically I have been in a long time.

I have experienced no noticeable side-effects from its use other than not being sleepy some nights if I forget to take it before bedtime.

Check out wiki and go from there.  Melatonin was apparently discovered when studies were done in regards to why reptiles change color in sunlight.  It gets deeper, check it out.

As far as kratom goes, its effects are opiate like, but its not an opiate.  Hence the "ease" of withdrawl but without the hook of a traditional opiate, which is where its value as an opiate kicker comes into play.  Ease of withdraw, none of the hook.. On a different shelf as opium.  Very safe imo..  its a godsend hence the uproar about it.  It really is 'innocent as a dove'...

Look them both up, its really interesting

This is how I've always assumed it works. I take melatonin almost every night, I started taking it because I was interested in the dreams it produces and how recalling those dreams is relatively easier than without taking it. When I stop taking melatonin it is not uncommon for me to experience sleep paralysis, which makes me wonder what role melatonin plays in the REM stage of sleep. It would appear to me that your brain gets used to you ingesting melatonin so it doesn't produce as much, so a few days of not taking melatonin would catch your brain chemistry off gaurd and it will naturally take a few days for your brain to compensate and return to normal.

I would guess that an increased level of melatonin makes you sleep more profoundly (increased REM sleep) therefore your dreams are much easier to recall in more detail.

It's amazing the dreams I recall when I take melatonin.

I once did an experiment and took 50mgs and it was unbelievable!

I don't remember it at this time though. It has been a couple years.

I did also feel extremely drowsy the next day but hey so what?! :yesnod:

Too much melatonin makes me extremely drowsy in the morning to where its hard to wake up, I think I'm sensitive to it though I only need like half a 2mg pill. I agree it allows you to remember the dream easier which is why it appears so vivid.

I would agree. I have taken some large doses of melatonin as well and my dreams were drastically enhanced. Like you said the only side effect I have noticed is being really drowsy the following morning.
