Calling all Zappa heads
    #1924459 - 09/17/03 08:32 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Hey, recently I've been listening to little else than Zappa's early 70s "holy trilogy" of Hot Rats, Waka/Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo. Frankly I think they're some of the finest music ever made, in particular Hot Rats. I now have the trouble of trying to navigate some of the rest of Zappas back catalogue, which is notoriously, em, "varied".

I know and love the 60s stuff, it's really the 70s and 80s I'd like some advice with. I've heard Weasles Ripped My Flesh and Burnt Weeny Sandwich might be worth investigating (but they're still Mothers albums, right?)

Cheers

Note: I have tried Ruben and the Jets and despise it.

Try "Over-Nite Sensation" for starters. I love Dirty Love.

Allow me to add Apostrophe, which is the crux of the biscuit. Joe's Garage parts 2&3 and Not Just Another Band From LA (gee, no shit) are also favorites.

The entirety of Roxy is as fine a live album as has ever been done and Sheik is a scathing exposure of weenies of all stripes. Just for shits and giggles add Live at the Fillmore and the whole "turtles" deal and the only thing else you will need is an examination of Freak Out. These are the Great Wheel of Motherdom. "Twirly, twirly, twirly, twirly, twirly, twirly, and now for the Studebaker Hoch dance lesson and cosmic prayer for guidance......"
