Listening to Frank Zappa
    #4467846 - 07/29/05 05:25 AM (11 years, 10 months ago)

Makes me glad I didnt seriously try to become a musician. There's no way I could come up with anything near as inventive or musically unique or brilliant as this guy. Really sometimes I listen to him and just marvel. I think a few hundred years from now, he will be one of the few rock and roll artists to be recognized as an actual composer. Also his actual compositions for orchestra, i.e the cd The Yellow Shark, are pretty decent. He takes a lot from Varese, but he still has his own voice I think.

I have about 10 Zappa albums I think.  Maybe a bit more.  I one day hope to have all of his standard releases, before moving on to live/bootleg material.  You dont happen to have those in mp3 form?
I love how he can go into complex avante-garde rock with complex musical arrangements and melody lines, then into something like 'any way the wind blows.'

i actualy do have most of his stuff on mp3 format (7 full cd's) but i've only gotten to know the first one so far (plus some other cd's i had from befor i downloaded that dischography)

did you read his book?
i'll tell you how he switches from the complex to the simple stuff...
zappa saw music in EVERYTHING and once you realize that you can't be surprised with any of his stuff
although he didnt take drugs but you can compare it to being sober or being on shrooms... they're both a kind of music each with its own charecter mood rythem and pitch

?A drug is not bad. A drug is a chemical compound. The problem comes in when people who take drugs treat them like a license to behave like an a$$hole.?
- Frank Zappa

Zappa wasnt into drugs, but that doesnt mean he didnt have investment in psychodelica.
Anyway, Zappa is my Chronos. Ive got about 3 gigs of his music, unfortunately Ive never had the time to group them into albums. Who do you guys like more Mothers of Invention or his time with Beefheart? Who do you think was a better soloist Zappa or Vai? Im talking when they were playing together, I think Vai is better now than Zappa in his prime but practice will do that.

I like Zappa better then Vai personally. I just like how he plays, and the sometimes odd soloing that he does. I would say that Vai probably got more technically skilled then Zappa, however I'm not sure I really believe that. I thought Beefheart was playing with Zappa in the 60's also? I know they were friends, and I thought he played with them live sometimes with the Mothers. A little House I used to live in off of the album Burnt Weeny Sandwich is pretty good. I like how he goes from classical piano to jazz to country to rock all in a song.
