About dessicants
    #1901461 - 09/10/03 10:03 AM (13 years, 2 months ago)

I just found a webpage about the water absorbitivity
of some dessicants.
Infos about CaCl2, MgSO4 and other.

MgSO4, like expected, is one of the best absorber among the list in
g H2O/g dessicant.

Absorbs 0.2~0.8 g (ml) of water per g of dessicant

drying a pound (454 g so ~410 g of water) of shrooms would
require 512.5 to 2050 g of MgSO4.

I don't know what the interval really means, if someone knows just reply.

I've seen a lot of questions about using dessicants to dry shrooms without fanning and how much to use.

Hope that helps.

MgSO4 is baked Epsom Salt (which had 7 H2O molecules attached to each molecule)

Magnesium sulfate rehydrates itself in contact of water.

I'm not sure why they give such a wide range for the ability of the chemical to absorb water, but let me say this. You really need to fan dry for at least a day before you seal the mushrooms up with desiccant. The fan drying will quickly remove the bulk of the moisture leaving the remaining traces to the desiccant. If you try to dry them with desiccant alone without forced airflow, it will be very slow going, and you risk mold growing on your mushrooms before they dry sufficiently.

Fan dry them for a day, then seal them in a Tupperware container for a week or so with desiccant. That's the fastest and cheapest way to go.

By the way, you can spend a lot of money on lab grade desiccants, or you can save money and get the same results with $2 worth of DampRid from Home Depot.

Good luck.

Yeah, in the paint section. Tell them you have a damp closet you need to dry out before you paint it. They'll walk you right to it.

Just to add to that: Home Depot in Canada doesn't sell damp rid, though they do sell an equivalent called dry-z-air. It's calcium chloride.

I'm not sure if you know this already, but a 4lb. box of MgSO4 (Epsom Salts) is usually cheaper than $2.
