i dont think the navajo really had much contact with buffalo as buffalo dont hang in the desert

the "raping" was done in cooperation with various neighbor tribes that the navajo had whipped up on for a few 100 years since moving into the area from up north

I've been in "the land" of the Navajo last year, and they really had buffalos... (and of course jewelry :crazy:)

Before they were hunted to near extinction, the buffalo once ranged from coast to coast and from central Canada to Texas. The Navajo's territory covers portions of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado.

true enough but the navajo's area is mainly desert and buffalo don't tend to be in the desert, rather grassland...they eat grass

I've been living/working with navajos/dine for 2 years and this summer been with the sicangu oyate/brule lakota sioux.

my conclusion is this so far. indians have no corner on spirituality. in the end they are no better / no worse than other cultures. cultures have different values such as work ethic, sex and so on. they had no superior position on environment then or now. there was just less of em back in the day so less impact.

their time was coming to an end regardless of what then US did. wanna know who the navajo hate worse than americans? mexicans/spanish as they were much more cruel and roman like in there ways. but by far they seem to dislike eachother ie intertribal or tribal more than other ethnic groups from what i have seen.

i do believe, at least with the tribes i have been exposed too, is they need to move on and get their shit together as they are lost in a limbo between old and modern morality and many are lost. today i watched as a drunk indian was passed out at the wisdom corner, wake up and puke on the sidewalk, all those around him side stepped and ignored him and it appeared as if he might choke on it. apparently indifference has been adopted from our culture.

i see so many anglo people come to the rez and want to be indian/learn the ways..guess what ... they dont want you to be...in fact the ones "allowing" you to learn the ways are merely taking your cash and pissing off the more conservative indians.

in the gen x and newer ages of indians i see less of a chip on their shoulder and more of a just getting on with life. or....a total destructive lifestyle that leads to an early death...this is problem the tribes themselves have to work out and the best thing i think the US can do is back out slowly and cut the purse strings. this will do them more good than any amount of cash you toss at a problem created generations ago...when none of us were alive.

im not trying to be negative or racist here. in fact i have made quite a few close native friends. just trying to give a more realistic and less romanticized view. peas.

oDin have you ever partakin in any of their ceramonies. Or learned from their elders any thing. To say they have no corners on realigion is obserd. Im not even going to try to explain it to you. They had an awsome view on enviroment. Any one that gives much respect to the land and belives that the land is there home and the sky is there shelter has some thing going on. They lived in harmoney with every thing. Well except for neighboring tribes. But when you are hunting and gathering for survival you would be pretty pissed to if some of your nieghbors started moving in on your supplies. We did rape their land, who killed all the buffalo, bear, wolf,beaver and so on. That was food and shelter all in one for the natives. Im not going to go on. But lets just say I disagree.

i was refering to the tribe as a whole not individual indians. as a whole they have lost thier rellgion. whats left is a mix of NAC , traditional and MOSTLY christian. the navajos didnt depend on buffalo for sustinence. they did not live in harmony, mankind rerely does, there was a much smaller population of humans was all..and for however cruel one thinks the asglos and spanish were the indian were worse to eachother...ask any hopi what they think of navajos...the hopi imo are much more spirtual than the navajos today. my main message is this..the native americans are no better or worse than any other american. to put them on some theological/moral pedestal is irresponsible ..

" ok i may have been mistaken on the range..how ever i would say that the northen NM range thay had was more in the mountainous areas that the navajo did noy inhabit. also another thing to say on the subject is that navajo lived in hogans which are not easily moved if at all. tribes that depended on buffalo were nomadic. im not saying they were no9t exposed toi buffalo...but tehy didint hunt tehm for survivial unless they left their area which is the land within the 4 sacred mountains ...a desert.

Odin you make some good points. I am from the North east and it must be a little different up here from down there. I would like to think that the song is just a song. I dont belive they realy ment just the Navajo as to what they were singing about but just using the name for its fluidity in the song. And werent navajo's farmers more so then hunters.
