Old name is Phallinus Ramosus I think the name has been changed Though to Foems something, It looks vey much like it is growing on black locuse so Im pretty sure that is what it is. Very common on that tree casuing a interior haertwood rot.

Ah...

Species: Phellinus rimosus
Variety: Fomes rimosus casuarinae
Variety: Fomes rimosus rimosus
Variety: Fomes tepperi casuarinae
Variety: Fomes tepperi tepperi

The babies are dead ringers for F. pinocola, but giving the older one another look as best I can, it does appear to have a lot more texture on the topside that the pinicola...  And we don't have black locust around here, lots of pine.

Love it!  Learn something new every day.  I seems difficult to get hard ids on a lot of the polypores here, not so many folks find them sexy.

Sketch - best pic of that yet...  I was going to chide you about focus last nite but decided you probably didn't need the grief.  Then I got distracted with the Phellinus stuff...

What did you do differently this time?  And a photo tip - get right the f up on your subject, if at all possible.  Wide pics for habitat are fine, but a good pic will be full of your subject.  Light behind you if you can manage, if not do something so it's not in the lens...  And...  Focus, for the love of mycology.  :bunnyhug:

Ok TY and I appreciate your being sensitive for me yesterday lol. Wasnt the best of days. I will use the advice. With you helping me my photography has already improved some. Thanx again to you and the rest of Shroomery. I just cleaned my lens and tried to point to the sky more often and take tons of pics from different angles as you suggested :wink: i waded through chest high jaggers to get that shot lol. I took maybe a hundred. Only the one above came out perfect without editing it. i think.

Remember that with digital film is free.  Every one of the great photographers here says the same thing - take a gazillion shots, maybe one or two will be good. 

It's another whole thing to do, on top of the foraging.  I'm not so focused on going that extra step to get the wowza photos, I'm satisfied if I can just get a shot with good focus and decent lighting.  Dealing with reflectors and diffusers is not what I'm doing at this point in my life. 

Just do it at whatever level you're comfortable with, we're not your boss.  :crazyeyes:
