Agaricus bitorquis... would like a second opinion
    #18890789 - 09/25/13 07:08 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Found these the past few years in the same spot and I finally got around to keying them out using "Key to Common Agaricus Species of the California Coast" -By Fred Stevens.

They key out to Agaricus bitorquis, but seeing as I've never tried them before I wanted to get a second opinion (as usual) before ingesting.

Found right off the trail an urban area with hard packed sandy-clay soil, in and around some scrub brush.  Most of the patch was NOT fully above ground but instead just looked like pins pushing up thru the ground; until I brushed them off and was rewarded with what I believe to be A. bitorquis.

Gills are much more pink than my crummy camera phone will admit hahah

Here's the pics.......

Thanks for your input

Get yourself a little paintbrush to take with you.  If you whisk the sand and duff off immediately BEFORE you turn the shroom upside down you won't have sand in the gills.  ;-)  I also cut off any stem butt that the stuff doesn't just brush right off of while it's still upright or sideways.

I hate sand in my shrooms.

"The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

Thanks for the tip, I usually do.  I have a personal rule tho:  If I'm unsure about the ID; I leave the fungus 100% intact.  Some species look so much alike that the base of the stem is the only way to tell them apart.  Now that I'm 200% sure what I have; I'm headed back to pick a few more for dinner. This time I will do my usual; brush the caps off, slice all the live Mycellium off the base and scatter it around :crazy2:  I've started many a patch that way

Good practice.  I groan every time someone puts up shrooms they've kept in a clump in a plastic bag and then washed.  WTF?

I live in the dunes and if I'm not super scrupulous the sand works it's way into everything.  I even wrap shrooms in bits of cloth to keep them from scattering their stuff onto others.

Keeps me off the streets.

HAHAHAH I'm in the same boat, It drives me bonkers (and this hobby/obsession/fascination/way of life keeps me off the streets as well!)  One of the first things I learned years ago when I first started researching (which I did for 3years before I ever ate anything) was:  PAPER BAG ALL FINDS..
Now a days I've started using the little plastic tubs that blueberries & grapes come in (from the grocery store).  I've found that they keep your mushrooms from being crushed in your bag/backpack, and they also have plenty of ventilation so the mushies can still breath.  The Coprinus comatus (Shaggy Mane) in this bin were picked 2 days ago, then placed in my fridge... as you can see they are holding up well:thumbup:  You can even go a step further and line the bin with a clean paper towel.  I just got lazy and didn't do that with these hahah

I'm amazed those shaggies aren't ink...  If there's a close patch, I wait 'till I'm hungry to go pick and get 'em in the skillet right away.

Congrats, you are very possibly more sick than I.  LOL.  I carry a couple yogurt containers for really messy stuff, and a stupid segmented plastic box, but for most edibles I just brush 'em up and put 'em in my bucket in the pack.  There's only so much room and after all the tools and cams 'n such...  In addition to some pieces of thin cotton cloth I carry a handful of little muslin bags that might hold a gallon or so comfortably, just in case I hit some kind of motherlode and there's not enough room in the pack.  Hope springs eternal.  I try to keep the gear weight <10 lbs, more just is too freakin' much when you take on a load of shrooms.

Carry on!
