I actually don't know anything about them, either, other than seeing what someone had said about them.

The black hairs.
The white ring, on the stipe.
The white spores.

Looks like that's what you have.....Armillariella mellea.

I'm pretty sure you should cook them, before consuming, and there might be a specific way of doing that.

yeah, that's what I thought I had Armillariella mellea, but there is no ring, and they didn't drop any spores.....I actually just tossed them cuz i'm not going to risk it. Too many poisonous look a likes.

Good thinking. NO ring? They should have white spores. If you find more use black paper, instead of AL Foil.

I see a clear ring in the first gill shot. In the third photo of your post, I clearly see white spore deposit on some of the caps. Overall appearance matches honey mushrooms, IMHO.

yep i see the ring also, that was going to be my first comment. my second was going to be that when mushrooms outside get rained on or just naturaly over time, some times it will take the annulus off. i see this alot with amanita muscaria. i thought you were pro???

The ring is not as well defined as the pictures and descriptions I have seen of it. It has also not rained here in over 2 weeks and those mushrooms just started growing there this week, so rain did not take off the annulus. As far as the spore deposites on the stem go, I also had those mushrooms in the same bag as some tree oysters, so for all I know, those spores may have come from the oysters that were on top of them in the bag.

Although I have found and IDed many mushrooms successfully, that hardly makes me a "pro". This is the first time I have found these types of honey mushrooms. I would much rather get many other opinions on it then to take the "I'm a pro" attitude and wind up getting sick.

I am almost 100% positive they are Armillariella mellea....I felt that way when I found them, but since I wasn't able to get prints from them to confirm, they go in the garbage.

Better safe then sorry.

When I go back I am going to try to print them on a black piece of paper. When I get a print from them, then I will say that they are definitely Armillariella mellea. Until then they won't be eaten.

PS, does this post look messed up to you guys, as if wordwrap isn't working? Maybe it's just my screen, but i have to scroll over to see the rest of the test as if wordwrap isn't turned on.

Looks fine on my computer, srg.

Hey, by the way, that shows a lot of intelligence, on your part. (Be safer than sorry)

Good luck.

srgtm1a, im going to say im almost certain those arent honey's but more of a Armillaria Ceptistipes. Im saying this just by looking at the caps, you'll notice that the cap of your fungi starts to curl under and is real thick juicy caps, and on all the honey's ive encountered and read about all were real thin wavy caps with a real dark spot in the center fading to real light brown to almost a tannish white, the ring is almost essential and should be white to an off yellow depending on age. Likewise the A. Ceptistipes is common to be known as the Fine-Scaled Honey Mushroom, this being a qoute "Scaley-capped Honey Mushrooms are more apt to cause stomache upsets then smooth capped species."

Non the less, this is more opionion, just giving you my three cents. good luck
