I don't mean to offend anyone here, since it doesn't help to insult those who are, as they believe, on the brink of suffering... but I was spurred on to reply after reading this thread in its near entirety
There was a fellow who advocating jumping off of a bridge in WV... it was quite an elaborate plan, and yet it did not work? Why is that? No, he is not a coward for not doing it... and no, he does not "fake" his pain... so why then when he was sure (or at least he believes he is sure) that his plan was absolutely fool-proof, and that he had the means and that he "wanted to die" did he not die?
I believe individuals like this poor soul are indeed undergoing a great amount of suffering, but realize that other suffer just as much as you do, and yet they do not go to such extremes.
I believe the general idea is that suicide results from when the pain exceeds the means to cope with it?
The idea here is that this gentleman did not indeed pass that threshold, which means there was something worth living for, even if it was not known to him, something worth staying here for. He would have jumped otherwise... right? I mean, if the pain was so extreme, he himself said the 9/11 people found jumping to be better than living... so the same logic must be applied here.
Also, the young lady who is 33 years old and has had a moderately successful (compared to most of the world) life. Why was she sticking around? Is she a coward? Absolutely not!
My point is... a lot of people talk of their elaborate plans to do this or that and then they do not come to fruition... you set yourself up to fail in your plan and then claim that it was some outside factor that kept you from it. Believe me, if you wanted to die, you'd do it. The threshold just has not been exceeded it.
What does that say? That you can endure more, more than you give yourself credit for in any regard. This notion of pain that you feel also signifies that BEFORE, there was not so much pain, and that, because of this, there must be a way to return or at least hold the pain at bay. There is a saying that we are looking out to the ocean of despair and suffering that awaits us, and because of this we too suffer before we even wade into the water... however, if we look just behind us, we'll see that there is a beach that confirms that we are indeed here, and that we can take comfort in knowing that there is more to life than suffering.
Often times, when we suffer, we fixate on it and we close our minds to anything else that might have been a good thing. We say how terrible our lives are, but let me ask you this. You have focused and fixated on YOURSELF and YOUR LIFE and YOUR SUFFERING, however, have you ever considered another person's suffering and what you can do to alleviate it?
Probably not. And don't be ashamed, 99 percent if not all people do this subconsciously. It is nothing to feel failure from. I too have done this when I was in a dark place in my life but I realized something dramatic
Some of you say that karma and religion don't exist, okay sure, why not... but what does exist? People... and what else exists? Suffering. What else? The way to get rid of the suffering, right? I mean, no one would ever be happy or at least tolerate life if there was no way to get rid of suffering, right?
So let me ask you this... so many say "I don't have a girlfriend/boyfriend, I was dumped, I am ill, I have no prospects, Life has no meaning, my family is terrible" and all sorts of things...
You list the things that have been done to you, but have you listed anything you have done for another human being? I mean honestly, have you? Not from my analysis you have not. It is nothing to be angered about either, again, this is nature to be concerned with the self before others, and even then, only our families are usually considered, not mere strangers.
It takes a special person indeed to know they suffer and in spite of this, survive and thrive. This option IS available to EVERYONE.
THink on this... if you have been able to eat, have somewhere stable to sleep, have some sort of job to go to, then my friend, you have gotten more than what most people have gotten throughout history. Think on this. How many people have died from famines, wars, plagues, etc... that truly wanted to live, and yet, with this amazing life of ours in this unparalleled time of opportunity, why throw that away?
You are spitting in the face of all those people who would beg and kill for what you have now, as little as you think it is. Simply having the right to get an education, the right, not the means even... is something so many did not have, no matter what they did. Being able to go to a doctor was not a right that many had either, and yet you all do have that right, whether or not you have the means.
All those saying they don't do well in school because of their depression, I too was diagnosed with depression and yet I am a 4.0 honors student at my university... why is this? Why have I not succumbed to darkness when I should have be able to?
I'll tell you why, because I wanted to help other people. THis idea, the idea of stopping the act of focusing inward and being selfish... the very act of committing the rest of my life to the service of mankind, however small and insignificant in the long run, is what keeps me going. "I can't do anything, my life doesn't amount to anything, if you don't have a degree by X years you have no point in life"
NOT TRUE AT ALL!!!!!
Frederick Douglass was a slave who later freed himself and became a very educated man, W.E.B. Du Bois was the first black man to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard despite being in a very racist America at the time
Despite being a woman, Margaret Thatcher rose to lead Britain for a time when the world said a Woman could not do so, she beat the odds.
These are regular people, there is no "genius gene" or special thing that they had that you do not have, they are flesh and blood, just like you! Even so, you do not need to rise to esteem as they have, you too can have your own sort of success, but you keep sabotaging every attempt with "I can't I can't I can't I can't I won't I won't I won't I won't"
The "basic cable" life you have, the ability to eat, sleep, and learn is unreal... do you know how fortunate you are?
Go to a local library and read things, devote your life to learning, so you can pass it on to others, what is the shame and harm in that? There is none. "It's too hard! I can't do it!" or "People suck! I won't do it!"
Well then, go find a bridge and jump... I guess you either have to start working on your life, or get going in dying. Life happens whether you want it to happen or not, and it is in our darkest hour, our most humiliating shame, that the greatest change CAN happen if you will allow it to.
What have you to lose? Most of you say you having nothing left, so yo uhave nothing to lose, right?
Do good things for people because it is the right thing to do, because you want to show, contrary to belief, that people are good for goodness's sake, not for religion or money or power, just because they are good people wanting to help others...
Have you honestly tried? Holding open a door, saying a kind word, giving a compliment, volunteering... you seem to have so much spare time, why not use it? What keeps you from it? The answer is that you keep making excuses for why the world isn't bending on knee for you... that is not going to happen my friends, it will never be so. The world yields her fruit of happiness and success to those willing to till the field and plant the seeds.
"I want to succeed so badly!" well then, DO IT! Don't just say it and be lazy, DO IT! Upon analyzing what you HAVE done for your goals, you will find you haven't done too much, but that's okay! The world is full of opportunity, no matter how small, and no, you don't need a million dollars or a yacht to be successful. Putting a smile on someone's face, benefiting their life... that is all that is needed.
NOtice I Haven't brought up a religious reason, or any other sort of reason like that.
You've suffered so greatly, but why not taking the suffering from someone else? That picture of that african boy who was suffering, covered in flies and filth. That was to make a statement that life is bad... but here's the catch, in doing so, you just proved that something can be done about it. My retort is this: Why aren't you helping him?
"It's too far away, it takes too much effort, I am just one person"
Bullshit
You think the guys who created Google thought that way? How about those who advocate for human rights, and succeed? What about those who organize local church groups or just groups of regular people, take in donations, and send water off or something... a girl I knew spent three afternoons packing seeds to send over to africa in order to help stem the tide of hunger. It was three days of idle time she had, and because of it, she lifted the burden of suffering in others. It was what she could do. FIND WHAT YOU CAN DO
If you put as much energy into living as you do dying, you'd find yoruself not only in a better place, but you'd also be making the lives of others better
You know what it is like to suffer, so why not life the burden from others who deserve it like that young african boy? SOmeone in your community? I'm sure there is something you can do. Regular people, throughout history, have done similiar. They were not super heroes or politicians or rich people... regular people with the idea that since they see suffering, they want to do something about it
My point is, a lot of this stems from the idea of you failing in some regard because you dont have this or that, because others are more fortunate or whatever, they have something you dont, when that has NEVER kept people from doing anything at all, ever. Stop thinking you need some special trait or thing to have meaning in your life, you don't need a darn thing, you have everything you need.
I was severely depressed during my high school years, but I didn't let that drag me down. I decided I wasn't going to let a state of my mind destroy my seemingly one chance on earth to make a difference, and because I was able to look outward instead of being self centered, I was able to see the suffering of others and I have decided to devote my life in pursuing the goal of bettering mankind.
"When the door of awakening is thrust open, it can never be shut again"
A kid from a poor family is going to college and succeeding, the top 10 percent or higher in his class. This poor boy is going to Africa on a study abroad due to his hard work and volition, and will be able to do something to help out there, even if it is just embracing those who suffering and offering kind words, even if it's just helping clean a house, or sweep a porch, or fill a water jug... it doesn't matter, the point is, i'm treating my suffering and depression by serving others...
All of you saying there is no way out, I am a living proof that depression can be beat back, you just need to want it badly enough. No medication or suicide will give you release. Perhaps its time you realized this yourself, hmm?
