Very close, it's mussel shell. I just like the colours in mussel shell more.

you should look into making pool cues.....they are usually fairly expensive to get a nice one...and if i were to pay 175$ on a pipe it wouldnt be a dry wooden pipe  just personal preference tho

but judging by the pipe, a pool cue wouldnt be too hard for you i dont think....however i dont know much about woodworking

most definitely...they are a great piece of work, dont get me wrong...and with the hours that went into the pipe, i wouldnt be surprised if 175 is about right if you factor in labor and how long it took to make

i just find it a tough sell, especially that expensive because the average stoner doesnt want a wooden piece that cost them as much as an illadelph straight tube

like i said tho, it comes down to personal preference....there are people who enjoy smoking wooden pipes, and would probably pay 200+ for it.....personally i wouldnt but thats because i dont like to smoke out of wood

:highfive: OP for some sick woodworking skills regardless of the application

Haha, thanks dudes.

Pricing is tough in this market, since we are all used to wooden pipes being in the $5-$20 range at our local head shops.

These pipes, unfortunately, give wood a bad rep. as they smoke like total garbage, in my opinion. Not to say they can't be great pipes, but.. they are just a different animal.

Tobacco pipes, on the other hand, demand much higher prices. Sure, the cheap factory made ones are still relatively cheap. But it is standard for a fine pipe artist to sell his work in the $300-$1000+ range. These are purpose built pipes that are perfectly suited to their function. Every detail of their form is designed to increase the pleasure of smoking. The materials used, and fit and finish are of the highest quality.

I am trying to bring that style of pipe making into our world, for you guys. You'll notice I always use african blackwood for my bowls. This wood acts differently that woods used in making tobacco pipes. It is more resistant to resin, tar, heat, and moisture. It will not sour or get bad tasting over time, like a briar pipe might.

These are purpose built, each dimension is considered carefully, to make for the best tasting smoking experience. They are an exercise in form and function.

But yes, it IS a tough sell, there is nothing to compare it to on the market, people see the word "wood" and associate it with cheap imported junk, in our world it is not known to provide a great smoke.

I suppose that is part of the reason why I like to post detailed images, I want people to see the level of detail in these pieces, as that is part of what sets them apart from other pipes out there.

Anyhow, hope that gives you a better idea of why my prices are what they are. I try really hard to keep them fair, and usually I am making around minimum wage. These are actually the least expensive pipes I have offered in about a year.

Doesn't really seem like that much.. I mean when you think "hunk of wood for 175" sure, it's a lot.. But quarters go for up to 110, and that lasts me all of a week. I assume these pipes would last much longer than 2 weeks. I wouldn't buy one, just because when I smoke I prefer glass, but it doesn't really seem that outrageous to me. I see people lay down 300-600 for a relatively basic bong.

yeah, i know dick about wooden pipes other than the ones ive smoked were jenky and crappy, or tobacco pipes  so its not like my criticism carries much weight

and yeah, i kinda assumed with the hours it took to make you probably werent making that much after taking into account labor...problem is hand blown worked glass bowls are fetching 15-20 bucks right now around here

but its a niche market, the higher end wooden pipes....its cool to see you're trying to bring that price down a bit, without making it a piece of junk

maybe in the future ill have to try a good wooden pipe, and itll probably change my opinion on them

I am developing a way to make glass-lined pipes in the same styles I make now. It would combine some of the advantages of a glass pipe, but would be able to have the slender form and strength of a wood pipe.

I don't want to reveal how I am doing it yet, because... it's secret for now, ha.

But I would be interested in what you like more about glass pipes? I love hearing about what people value in a pipe. And I want to get as many viewpoints as possible, so I can always keep improving my designs.
