Zoloft and other antidepressants
    #18620631 -

I'm curious , has anyone been on Zoloft or other antidepressants ? Which do you take? How do you find it? Are there side effects? If you quit is there withdrawal ? Would you recommend taking them or not?

My mom has a prescription for Zoloft and was asking my opinion. Any experiences with Zoloft or similar drugs would be greatly appreciated !

Eeeeaaaasily wean yourself off them is the main thing to know. Also to do this immediately if your thoughts start getting wonky that you need to realize it's the medicine not you.

I had a friend whose depression just turned into anger on antideps, another who they don't seem to do much for, and my favorite professor who takes Zoloft and I think it works for.

Just be cautious and know that it's more important to exercise and eat well.

I would recommend against them for now just because there are so many other factors, and I'd recommend CBT. Antideps can bridge a gap if necessary though, so don't be afraid to put em to work!

I would NEVER use antidepressants ever again. They have lot of negative side effects... One of the ones thats pops out is thoughts of suicide! There are also negative sexual side effects. Unless you have a severe chemical imbalance, depression is a normal reaction to certain aspects of life. It's there to tell you that "something is wrong". Now how does it help to numb that feeling? The feeling that is trying to tell you that something is not right. How does that help you solve the problem? How does it help you recognize whats actually wrong? It doesnt. Unless it helps you pinpoint whats wrong, I dont see the benefit. Because if you dont adress whats actually causing the depression, its almost like you are throwing it on the back burner in hopes that the antidepressant will make you feel good long enough to "get over" the problem without directly addressing the problem.

I'm taking anti depressants because I don't have a choice.

I take Cipralex (Lexapro)

They worked wonders on my life. They took care of the depression and they have relieved me of anxiety and panic attacks.

The side effects I have are minor. I feel as if I stare into space more often but I only notice it if I focus on my state of mind

There are withdrawals syndromes when you quit, brain zaps mostly and minor depression. Quit 25% at a time

I would recommend taking them if you suffer from depression/anxiety on a day to day basis. Some people get sexual side effects, but its not everybody.

I can officially say that they have saved my life. I was suffering from depression and panic attacks. I don't anymore, I live a normal life.

Although seriously Patlal I'm happy you're doing better now. You seem like a nice guy and deserve to feel good!

Re: Zoloft and other antidepressants [Re: Patlal]

I just started on the lexapro this week I've been prescribed for months(I was actively taking psychedelics and didn't want to mix ssris and recently I decided to give the srris a shot and give psychs a break for at least a little while) - and I've felt a little....floaty, but not in a euphoric/stoned way this past week. The worst was the first 48 hours, I was so zoned out at one point that I think the clerk at the grocery store thought I was high.
I definitely feel spaced out. A little bit like the day after an acid trip, almost.

It's also taken away my appetite, not to the extent that amps/stims would or anything, and it's nothing that weed hasn't remedied...but I've noticed that I've been less keen towards cooking than I was immediately prior to taking it - and just eating in general...it's like half the fun and fulfillment I got from it is gone. I am also terribly thirsty/have cotton mouth, I feel a little tired but I'm sleeping less than I was before, I think because it's made me a little too tired to go running or exercise during the day much.

Lexapro is one with fairly mild side-effects that's considered rather potent, I've heard zoloft has some pretty terrible side effects.

Now for the pros so far(like I said I've only been on them a week), I feel more..stable. Day to day anxiety is almost completely gone, and I think I feel..well, a little better than I did, or like I'm ready to start feeling better. Idk, it's weird. At this point I feel like it could go 50/50, I'm gonna stay on it for a little while longer and potentially add a low/therapeutic dose of amphetamines. I don't like being on ssris, but I feel like they have helped me in the past(I am not new to depression), and I feel like they could help me again with this rut that I've gotten in.

My psychiatrist recommended I stay on anti-depressants a full year because the last time I took them it was relatively short term(gave them up after a few months when I started feeling better, oddly enough). Now, I've always found psychedelics highly therapeutic and I've read up on interactions with ssris, and I'm worried about serotonin toxicity and was really torn about the meds - hence why I've only just started taking an rx I've had for months.

edit:

also the side effects are at their worst in the first week you take them.

I took Zoloft for about 2 months. I stopped eating. I had no joy in anything, and it made me far far worse than when I was not on an SSRI at all.

I was once on Lexapro too (Like Patlal is now.) And I honestly loved it.

I felt energized, I was always happy. No amount of bull shit could have brought me off my cloud.
But, SSRI's fucking suck, so I stopped taking it and learned how to be happy without a medication.

I don't ween off meds. So I just stopped taking them. I noticed though that I relied on them a lot for sleep, and was insomniac to the max for like 2 weeks.

Thankyou :sun:.

I do empathize with people who are critical of psych meds in general, as they are probably completely over-prescribed and they are definitely not a cure, they're an aid that should be used in conjunction an effort to improve oneself and confront the circumstances that only further your depression. You're right when you say they can bridge a gap and they can break a self-depreciating cycle of depression and really help you dig yourself out of it.

They're also not for everyone. My cousin was severely depressed when she was 14-15 mainly due to and exacerbated by horrible bullying, the shrink wrote her a script for paxil(I don't think they give that to kids anymore...this was circa 2004-ish ) and sent her on her way and things got real bad real fast.

I'm on Zoloft and it's helped me a lot. Of course, I had very severe clinical depression, so YMMV.

I take 60mg Cymbalta and 15mg Remeron daily.

If you're gonna take an antidepresant, the long-acting ones are better than the short acting ones, IMO. the short acting ones tend to have more side effects and are harder to wean off of. short acting ones are zoloft, celexa, prozac, wellbutrin, remeron, and paxil. long acting ones include cymbalta, pristiq, and vybrid

Right on for having a sensible, open, outlook on them   ...

Admittedly, I fall into the camp of those that are critical of these sorts of meds. When I hear about so many people taking them I cringe  . I think there are cases where they most definitely help people...but I also think they are way way over prescribed, and quite a few folk end up worse off being on a pill for the rest of their life. There should also be other approaches taken before being handed an anti-depressant (but that doesn't always seem to be how things work when there's a pill that can "help").

I was on lexapro for a short while about 7 or so years ago. After taking it I wasn't as depressed and I was a wee bit less anxious through out the day, but I wasn't happy either and actually seemed to feel less range of emotion in general. The stuff made me feel numb (not physically). I stopped taking it after a while because I didn't feel that I was benefiting from it in any way, and I wanted to trip :smirk: .

That was at a rougher point in my life in general, when I was taking the lexapro...I still have my days of feeling down (today is one of them actually), and I have an ASD & other things going on that I have to deal with & address that many seem to do so with pharmaceuticals...but I try other approaches for various reasons and they seem to help somewhat.

I changed my diet. I think diet has more of an influence on one's mentality/mood than most people think it does...I started eating way less crap, and eating more goodness. More real whole foods and less things that come in a bag, a box, or frozen. Less meat, more fish & eggs. More water, lots of water. Simply more fruits and veggies, rice, bread. Less sugar.

I use plants/herbs with anti-depressant properties. Kratom, Mucuna pruriens, and passion flower have worked well for me (cannabis too). Nothing even comes close to being as effective as kratom is for me as an antidepressant. Small daily doses of that is like a miracle for me, that shit is my panacea :yesnod: . St Johns wort didn't do a damn thing for me (could have been the quality of the herb). Small daily to every other day doses of syrian rue gave me a pronounced anti-depressant effect.

I really appreciate you guys sharing your perspectives on these drugs, please keep them coming ! I plan to show this thread to my mom to help her make her choice. I personally don't like the addictive nature of them ( needing to take them every day and getting brain zaps if you stop ) but i would love to hear more of other people's thoughts and experiences.
