Re: Vegetarians [Re: withoutawire]

i love my new carnivorous diet, i feel like i'm gaining more muscle and have more energy overall. food options have multiplied exponentially as well, which is a good thing.

as mentioned earlier i was a very unhealthy vegetarian lol. was not able to pull that off properly in terms of nutrition. i think certain people are just better disposed to meat eating diets (myself) while others might be healthier going with vegetarian options.

that's why it's ridiculous to push a diet on anyone for moral reasons...everyone is different.

I'm a vegetarian. For so many reasons but to try and sum it up:

1) There is no good reason to eat meat. Any nutritional value found in meat can be found in copious amounts elsewhere. "It tastes good" is a bs reason. For protein, see: beans, nuts, seeds, dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt), etc. For b12 see: dairy, eggs, supplements.

2) The environment. Meat production is an incredible waste of resources and it is becoming more drastic with the growing population.

3) Factory farming. Animals are sentient beings. They are raised in confined areas and gorged from cradle to grave. It is a source of a great amount of suffering.

4) Economical. Eating vegetarian is much cheaper if done right.

5) Spiritual reasons. Doing my part to decrease the amount of suffering and live in harmony with the world.

6*) Health. This is debatable but switching to vegetarian forces me to look more carefully at my diet and ultimately eat healthier. I can no longer go to a fast food joint when I'm hungry for convenience. It's amazing how difficult it is to go out to eat and finding a proper meal without animal carcass on the menu.

Oh and if you like veggie burgers learn how to make them yourself. It's pretty easy and costs much less.

Edit: I forgot to mention I don't have a problem with eating meat for survival. It is appropriate in that situation. I speak of vegetarianism in modern society where it has become obsolete. I believe the shift to a vegetarian diet is important to our evolution as a species. We are not in the stone age anymore.

These. Definitely heavy on #2 and #3, The water inputs and methane outputs for livestock are insane to think about, particularly when compared calorie per calorie to the inputs/outputs for non-meat food sources. #6 certainly summarizes how I feel about how it has shifted my perspective on diet, as eating is not as convenient as it was before and cooking for myself is more of a necessity (which feeds into #4). I originally went from omnivore to pescetarian about 3 years back, mostly for health purposes. My perspective of the impacts of diet expanded since then, and I recently decided to cut out seafood and dairy for the above mentioned reasons.

To the above, I push my diet on people sometimes, but it's less for moral reasons than for health. When I see my immediate family biting into a burger and think about our family's apparent mild-moderate predisposition to heart disease, it makes me want to smack them in the head...but I suppose red meat once a week is much healthier than some people in this country, so I can't fault them too much. It's just frustrating sometimes when some people can't acknowledge the much more impactful nutritional desires of the body/brain versus the brief sensual desires of the mind.

The following is for crystal G:

Quote:
Pullups mostly work your back, they don't really work your arms a whole lot. Especially if your palms aren't facing you, then they are almost strictly your lats, which is your upper and middle back. Only when your palms are facing you, do they work your biceps too.

You should add weights to decrease your reps. Doing 20 reps is more of an endurance exercise; if you want your muscles to grow, you should add weight to your pullups until you can only do around 5 reps at a time.

Still, pullups aren't for making your arms grow.

If you want to work your arms more while still using the pull-up exercise, do muscle ups. At least that will work your triceps. This is what they look like

I saw this post when I was coming from Ritalin and forgot to respond. I hate that burnout comedown feeling. Anyways, I didn't even tealize how little I was working my arms and so I have recently been working on the tehcniques you showed. THANKS! I didn't realize but I was doing it all wrong

Quote:
You're basically telling me I should neglect my back even though I'm a gymrat, because I'm a girl. Worst advice ever.

Why is that so? Obviously a blanced body is best and that is what I strive to achieve. However, the last thing I think a woman would want to place emphasis on is the back...right?

On a side note, I have been trying "surya namaskar". I try and do 40 in the morning. It REALLY gets the blood flowing and the body working properly. I think its great because it works almost every muscle in the body. Felt easy at first. But once you start doing more of them you will feel the burn. I have been alternating days between that and running+calesthenics. Gives my bones a break. Yoga is some trill shit

This post is for the rest of the thread posters:

What are some good sources of protein that are vegaterian? Tofu is nice but there are high estrogen levels associated with it

I am not even trying to get ripped once again. Just not skinny lol. No matter how much I seem to be eating, I never canput on weight. Any help is appreaciated

I have also been looking into the "bulletproof" coffee:

Some people have one cup of coffee in the morning with grass fed butter, and coconut oil. This apparently fills you with energy because the fats and healthy oils are treated as carbohydrates by your body. So you instantly feel energy from the oils, and you are sustained with that energy till midday. Some testimonies have said that this method completely counters the afternoon slump in energy

Part of me says this guy is full of shit. Other part of me says it is worth a try. And another part of me says that he is wired off modafinil so that's why he claims such benefits from his lifestyle changes (he is open about his modafinil use). But everything he is suggesting with this specific coffee is natural

Anyways, I was going to give this a try to put on weight. What do you guys think? Eating more fats instead of sticks and twigs (I eat almost completely fruits and veiggies) will help me gain mass. the idea of having complete energy throughout the day also sounds great. I just ordered the caf and decaf bags of bulletproof along with coconut oil and butter

Since I eat eggs and dairy, I tend toward cottage cheese, eggs and egg whites, and Greek yogurt.  I try to moderate my soy intake, and the Quorn brand of non-meat is made with mycoprotein, and seitan is made from wheat.  I also eat beans with grains.

That said, I'm obviously not lactose- or gluten-intolerant.

I'm a vegetarian and am for a few various reasons.
First and foremost, since we have the ability to choose an alternative to massacring millions upon millions of animals, why not practice it? I think that it is our role as humans to be the best that we can be, barbarically killing animals "just because" isn't in that picture.
Number two would be for health reasons. My grandmother has heart problems, my dad has familial ALS, and my mom has arthritis. A healthy diet is a key preventative measure against all of those things, and a healthy diet is easier to practice without eating meat.
Number three would be that it feels better overall. Since I stopped eating meat I have felt much better than when I was. I am no longer sluggish, overweight and my mind runs at a much faster rate.

I personally think everyone should be vegetarian. In my opinion it is the only logical/ethical choice.

Quinoa too.
If you aren't vegan, Greek yogurt would be an obvious choice.

Yeah I was just going to ask about qinuoa. I have been looking around and it is kind of a radical new thing to be incluing into our diets. Eggs is a "done" thing. omelet, sunnyside up etc. But I feel that qinuoa isn't so the recipes aren't so intuitive

You just have to get creative.
I've used quinoa in soups, with eggs, in Asian type dishes, pilafs and I'm thinking about trying to make a quiche with it included.

This was the first year I grew a vegetable garden, and today I tasted the fruit of my efforts

My "asian green mix" (a mixture of mostly choy sum, and bok choy) was ready to be picked! Made it into a delicious salad, and will definitely be growing these "asian greens" for years to come!

I've been vegetarian for over 12 years now with a couple, year-long forays into veganism.  I wish I could remain vegan, but it's hard.  My reasons are:  animal ethics (factory farms are unbelievably cruel and inhumane), health, environmental, and humanitarian.

I am totally okay with eating wild-caught fish and game, but that's the only exception I make.  If people could stop eating meat we could use all that food we grow to feed the animals to just feed people, and that would put an end to world hunger.  Plus we'd reduce the epidemics of heart disease, cancer, and obesity.

Fact.

I like it in shabu shabu and sukiyaki. It's kind of like kale, when consumed raw it can have a bitter aftertaste that is off-putting to some people if you are not used to it. I bet a lot of vegetarians here would like bok choy in sukiyaki with tofu, eggs, udon noodles, shiitake mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and vegetable broth.

I had it with shiitake mushrooms in a basic salad. It was excellent.

You actually like raw shiitake mushrooms? Interesting. I think raw shiitake is pretty bland; the true richness of the flavor profile doesn't really come out unless you steam it or boil it. Shiitake tastes the best if you boil it in a soup or some kind of broth, IMO. It almost tastes like it's already been marinated in a soy-based tsuyu sauce.

:congrats:

Besides the torture these creatures have to go through so we can have these products we so much "need". Is not even natural, our demand for food is so high that not even nature can keep up with it. Cycle of life is too slow for us so I don't even know what they are eating at this point. Last time I checked there were cloning chickens with no feathers, eyes, nor beak for that matter. I have to be honest I have not been vegan my whole life, in fact very far from it. When people ask me why and all that shit they love to question, I respond: Once you know, you gotta be too shitty inside to look the other way and pretend that didn't happen.

Bashing on vegetarians is not my job, but I often ask my self what's the line between mild torture and severe torture. Unless raping cows, and keeping them pregnant so you can have cheese with your fries is totally cool in your book.
