Wow... this story is messed up.



"Images of a decapitated referee in Sao Luis, Maranhao, Brazil, aided the police investigation into what exactly happened to the victim and also in identifying who was involved in his death. Yahoo New Zealand Sports reported July 7 that videos from spectator cell phones at the football (soccer) game captured the horrific retaliation killing of the referee and the subsequent act where he was quartered and decapitated by the angry mob of fans.

The victim has been identified by Reuters as amateur referee Octavio da Silva Catanhede Jordan.

Luis Sousa Moraes was identified by police as one of the killers through the videos. He was arrested on July 3. Two other suspects were identified and questioned.

Moraes admits to beating da Silva but says he did not kill him.

The unfortunate referee's death was the result of an angry mob -- of which Luis Moraes was apparently a willing participant -- that restrained, lynched, decapitated, and quartered him after the 20-year-old allegedly fought with and then stabbed player Josenir dos Santos Abreu multiple times. The referee reportedly used a machete-like knife in his attack when Abreu refused to leave the football field after the ref red-carded him.

Abreu would die from the stab wounds while en route to hospital. Friends, family, and fans of the football player descended upon the referee and restrained him as the wounded player was taken away. According to Yahoo New Zealand Sport, the mob not only tied up da Silva but tortured him as well. When the enraged mob heard that Abreu was dead on arrival at the hospital, they stoned da Silva to death.

The mob then lynched, quartered, and decapitated the referee there on the field. His head was then staked and placed in the center of the football field.

These were the images captured on various cell phones and uploaded to the Internet. Police would later use the videos to make arrests in the killing.

Another video also made the Internet rounds after the brutal slaying -- that gruesome footage is of a decapitated body -- reportedly that of the referee -- being reassembled by what appears to be a medical team. The graphic video, which can be seen on LiveLeak (WARNING: extremely gory, may be offensive to some), shows the team not only reconstructing the dismembered body, but shows one man in a white lab coat placing the disembodied head back atop the corpse's shoulders."

The ref did start the whole thing by stabbing the player who refused to leave the field... so I don't feel bad for him.  But still, wow.
