Vegetarians
    #18444277 -

So who else on the shroomery besides me is a vegetarian, and why are you a vegetarian? I'm very curious to hear why. I grew up eating a lot of venison and other meat processed from deer, and when i got older all meat started to make me sick. Fellow vegetarians please share your views :saulgoodman:

Started eating veggie roughly every 2nd night, although more realistically maybe twice a week, about 3 months ago.

We are slowly cutting down on meat both in frequency and amount. I have also embraced trying vegetarian meals, which was something i was staunchly opposed to before.

I have lost alot of weight (even though i am lean and athletic anyways) and look and feel healthier than i have ever before. (however, i am also training pretty hard in the triathalon disciplines, so in addition to my diet, i AM more in shape than i've ever been before.)

Can't complain, it's cheaper, sits better in my stomach, makes me feel good both ethically and physiologically, pleases my girlfriend and is all around a positive thing in my life.

I can't see myself ever going totally vegetarian. Maybe freegan/flexitarian if anything ... we are wanting to incorporate raw foodism into our diet to a certain extent.

Good to hear  Kudos to you for trying something new. I recommend Morning Star brand veggie burgers. kinda pricy, but I like to buy 1 box whenever i grocery shop. Also, stir frys are delicious and healthy

We're not into the fake meat, also not into buying packaged/prepared foods.

Stirfrys once or twice a week, curries, legume dishes (chickpeas and lentils)

However, we are lacking variety - i should plan some meals out ahead of times.

Stirfry is kind of the go to veggie meal around here, i must admit.

I'm a vegetarian. For so many reasons but to try and sum it up:

1) There is no good reason to eat meat. Any nutritional value found in meat can be found in copious amounts elsewhere. "It tastes good" is a bs reason. For protein, see: beans, nuts, seeds, dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt), etc. For b12 see: dairy, eggs, supplements.

2) The environment. Meat production is an incredible waste of resources and it is becoming more drastic with the growing population.

3) Factory farming. Animals are sentient beings. They are raised in confined areas and gorged from cradle to grave. It is a source of a great amount of suffering.

4) Economical. Eating vegetarian is much cheaper if done right.

5) Spiritual reasons. Doing my part to decrease the amount of suffering and live in harmony with the world.

6*) Health. This is debatable but switching to vegetarian forces me to look more carefully at my diet and ultimately eat healthier. I can no longer go to a fast food joint when I'm hungry for convenience. It's amazing how difficult it is to go out to eat and finding a proper meal without animal carcass on the menu.

Oh and if you like veggie burgers learn how to make them yourself. It's pretty easy and costs much less.

Edit: I forgot to mention I don't have a problem with eating meat for survival. It is appropriate in that situation. I speak of vegetarianism in modern society where it has become obsolete. I believe the shift to a vegetarian diet is important to our evolution as a species. We are not in the stone age anymore.

If you're into variety I'd suggest looking more into ethnic cuisine. Things like tempeh, insalata de caprese, tofu and vegetable shabu shabu, sukiyaki, mountain vegetable udon, etc.

One of my all time favorite dishes is dobin mushi. It's a type of soup made with matsutake mushrooms. You must use these mushrooms, you won't get the same flavor with other mushrooms. Real matsutake from Japan is too expensive (seriously about as expensive as drugs, like $500 a pound), but you can find "knock-off" matsutake that are grown in Korea and Seattle for about $4 a package in the States. They are also known as pine mushrooms.

Usually people use fish to bring flavor into the soup, but you can substitute with kelp and seaweed instead. Here's a recipe if you're interested: http://www.steamykitchen.com/6015-matsutake-mushroom-dobin-mushi-recipe.html

Something like a third of the Indian population is vegetarian too, because of Hindu religion, so I'd suggest looking into a lot of their dishes for good vegetarian. The way that they spice their beans and rice makes you feel like you're eating meat too.

Aside from classic bean and rice and cheese burritos, there's also pasta salads. Throw in some chopped boiled eggs, sliced olives, feta cheese, and make some vinaigrette to pour on top.

Good post. Alternate sources of protein (that aren't meat) are so much healthier. The difference I feel in my body compared to when I used to eat meat is amazing.
Also, a lot of people are so ignorant and are so set against vegetarianism, that they will not even give it a try, even thouigh it could increase their lifespan, make them feel great, and many many other things. I wish other people were more open to it

I've gone pescatarian before, and my body did feel a lot better, I just personally couldn't go full vegetarian right now. I love seafood too much, and I like having a variety in my foods. Especially now that I'm bodybuilding and I have to consume between 140-200g of protein a day... there's only so many protein shakes and eggs I can eat every single day before I get really sick and tired of it. I already have enough of a hard time as it is stuffing down all the steaks, chicken breast, fish, and shellfish, on top of 2 protein shakes a day just to meet the minimum 140grams. Even with all that, a lot of days I only make it to 100g.

I've been a vegetarian for a total of 2 1/2 years in the past. 1yr when i was 18 and a year and half around 20. I'm turning 27 on tuesday and haven't eaten meat in a week. Everything about it is just making me sick for some reason.

I'm growing tired of eating meat.
Tired of it getting stuck in my teeth.
Tired of the preparation.
Tired of choosing between having chicken or beef for meals.

Tired of thanking animals for giving their life to satisfy my taste buds.

I've been a pescatarian since september.  A few months before that but I can't remember how long.

although I have eaten meat when I was hungry and had no other option.  no more than 5 times though.

I'm a pescatarian because I don't think it's ethical that tons of grains we produce in America are fed to animals when they could be fed to hungry people.

I can relate. I stopped eating it because I just completely lost my taste for it. Even the smell of something like deli ham is just so unappealing to me. It makes me sick to my stomach

I was a full blown veggie for over a year I had visited a slaughter house... but chicken wings are way to good.

These last few weeks have been overkill though. Gotten to the point where i was cooking them nearly every night. Blegh. Then my auntie comes home with a few more lbs and im like fuck this shit, lol.

Yeah. Good luck with that. The human species have been eating meat since the beginning of time. The day the majority of humans stop eating meat will be the day that the earth is no longer here.

Now, I do agree with some of what you said. The treatment and process of the animals that we eat is nothing short of horrific. I commend you for doing what you're doing. That said, that's your choice. You said earlier that eating meat because it tastes good is a bullshit excuse.

No, it's not. You eating the way you eat is your choice, and if someone wants to eat meat because they think it tastes good, that's their choice as well.

I grew up vegatarain in the family. I ate meat when I came to college. But eventually went vegetarian again

Any vegatarains out there who manage to put on muscle? I am unable to gain significant muscle but I don't care too much. I don't wanna be ripped. Just have a decent core (apparently this is incredibly important for posture)

I went back to being vegatarain because it feels cleaner on the body. In various hindu texts vegetarian food is suggested because it leaves the body supple. Also, eating pretty bland and veggy-based meals helps me think better. It sounds fnny. But having oatmeal for breakfast instead of bacon and eggs leaves me thinking less about food and overall fills me with more vitality

Now when you say core, do you mean strengthen your core, or get abs?

If you mean strengthen your core, up your egg intake, and invest in some whey protein. Do a lot of bodyweight exercises that work your entire core--things like jumping squats, pull-ups, pushups, dips, etc.

Now if you mean get abs, lower your carb intake. Your abs aren't showing because your body fat percentage is too high. I don't know what kind of vegetarian food you eat, but I've seen a 300lb vegetarian chick eat fried cheese sandwiches and french fries on almost a daily basis.

LOLLLLLLLLLLLL

That's filthy. Fried cheese sandwhiches and French fries hahahahahahahaha

But ya I mean strengthen my abs. Because if your abs hold your upper body up, then there will be a proper energy flow throughout your body. Improving posture also makes you subconsciously more confident

And yeah. squats, dips, and I do pull-up/leg ups. Meaning I do a pull-up and then lift my legs to reach a 90 degree angle. Sometimes I try and push past that 90 degree angle

I have been making good progress. Between running and calesthenics, I spend about 45mins working out daily and I have been getting GREAT results

And I eat mainly fruits and veggies at home. Never fast food or processed food. "Color is good" is the motto of my diet

Breakfast usually a HUGE omlette or a quick bowl or two of oatmeal as the main course. Some fruits an green tea

Lunch is usually 2bowls of salad, some kind of vegatably sandwhich, pasta etc

And dinner some sort of vegatably indian food with unleavened bread

Could you link me to a place for making good veggie burgers?

And also, do any of guys eat fish? Why is it that vegatarians eat fish? What logic is there behind it? I am not trying to start an argument, just wondering in general
