I am a rehabilitated sex offender.
    #18342885 -

I went to sex offender treatment when I was 16 years old. No criminal conviction ever took place, I was placed voluntarily into inpatient sex offender treatement by my parents with cooperation from the prosecutor, DA, and circuit court judge, as well as the victim's parents. This was done with a fair amount of secrecy, and no one in my home town (except for the aforementioned) knew that was being sent to sex offender treatment.

I completed the program successfully and was released after about 1 year of in-patient treatement.  I have no criminal record.  I have never sexually offended on anyone since.  It's been 14 years now.

I am still sensitive about this topic. People do not understand how a person can be a good person for 14 years of his life only to learn that he was committing a terrible act against a young girl as a teenager.

I see this as a sign that everyone deserves a chance if they have the desire to improve their life and truly learn how what they have done affects others.

I just wanted to share. I'm trying to be more forthcoming about this information in my life but it's really difficult to trust even my closest friends of ten years with such a taboo and sensitive topic.

How young was the girl?

As a 16 year old, what is considered a "sex offender"?

She was 12 at the time. It was not consensual.

I do not wish to go into details any further.

As you should be....This is a part of your past that you should bury deeply, and never tell anyone.

You are lucky that the DA/court/victim let you get help instead of getting a conviction.

It's cool that you have not offended again.  Keep up the good work!

Thank you so much. I thank the universe and powers that be every day for giving me a chance and I thank myself for being able to understand what I need to do to take care of myself and my state of mind. I am a successful small business owner and am 30 years of age.

In certain instances it is necessary that I tell a person. Such as my wife.  I could not live with myself if I committed to this women for the rest of our lives if she did not know my past. We do not want children but that is another bypothetical instance where I would feel obligated to tell my sig-other as well.

I am so very lucky. I don't know why or how I got a second chance but I have made good of myself thus far and plan to continue.

I don't think that she was 12 is a major issue, especially since you were 16 at the time, but since it was not consensual, there lies the problem for many people.

This is subject matter that should not be discussed with friends, or anyone for that matter.

Maybe in 30-40 years you could discuss this with people, but 14 years is not that long ago, it's too fresh, and at the age of 30, you are still a very sexually healthy, you need to be old and impotent to discuss this matter without fear of discrimination.

"im still sensitive about the topic"

you should be.  You raped someone.

Showing remorse, and showing you have a conscience...  You can be forgiven. By society, by God, or anyone else.  Especially yourself.

you were a child yourself, I dont believe it is entirely your fault to begin with.

feel better!

I don't beat myself up for it.

I feel that my experience in rehab set me on a good course I would not have found by myself.

Thank you for the support, everyone. It's good to hear that my thoughts on keeping this part of my life buried have been echoed by others as well.

You realize nothing is ever truly buried right?? Especially any type of criminal activity.

Of course I do.

Nor is this something I feel I am running from.

If the truth is revealed by circumstances beyond my control, I will accept the consequences just as I accepted the consequences 14 years ago.

By that priniciple I give myself to whatever higher power may exist and continue on my positive path.

I had been considering making this post for a few weeks now. Every time some one is in the news for sexual crimes, the comments are all generally the same. Torture and kill him, that we're all incurable and need to just be put down like rabid dogs. I've pretty much spent the last 10 years living in total fear, afraid that at any moment some psycho hell bent on a 'revenge mission' is going to come and kill me simply because he saw my face on the internet. Then a few weeks ago I see this: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18262957/page/1 which shows that there really are people out there who think like that. The only thing keeping these people away from me is the fact that they don't want to spend their life in prison to get this so called revenge. That's goddamn terrifying. What's more terrifying is that this behavior is pretty much supported by the vast majority of the population, thanks largely to the media spinning everyone up into a hate frenzy.

I was still a child when I committed my crimes as well. I went through a treatment plan as well. I've never been in danger of relapse, and not every sexual offense is based on sexual desire (something the general public doesn't seem to understand). You treat this like any other 'sickness', by understanding it and preventing the behaviors or situations that lead to the desire to offend in the first place, and it's a lot easier than you might think. As much as the lynch mob would like to believe, not everyone is incapable of control just because they committed a sex offense in the past. I will give you that there are some people who just don't care. I'm all for keeping these people locked up just like everyone else. If they don't want to help themselves, then they can't be helped.

I'm almost 28, have been registered for 9 years now. This is my last year. Normally it's for life, I was still a minor when I committed (was charged and adjudicated as well) my offense and it is not usual procedure, but was part of the deal my lawyer made with the prosecutor. I've been married almost 10 years, have a son who is starting third grade next year and have mostly stayed out of trouble (I got caught with weed once, and criminal mischief another time). I would like to say I've been a productive member of society but I'll be damned if I can find a job as a registered sex offender. I have no special training or anything, don't even have my GED (largely as a result of the charge and subsequent treatment program, it's a long story). I have nothing to offer, every other applicant has at least my resume, but they don't have registered sex offender attached to their application.

My wife knows, my brother and family (that still has anything to do with me) knows of course.. Two of my friends who I've known since we were kids, knows. But no one else really. Anyone who finds out turns it into a joke. Like two 'friends' would come over and then one would tell me a 'secret' about the other, that he was a sex offender and see how I react. They'd carry on the joke, until they would 'slip' and say the wrong charge, the slip would of course be MY charge and MY victim instead of the friend's made up one. I think another of my friends knows, he keeps making posts about how much he hates rapists and molesters and stuff. He told a story about some guy in the prison he was in who was in there for molesting a young girl and that he found out that day the old guy had been killed in a prison fight and basically just said good riddance.

I could go on and on but I guess this is enough, that's mostly what's been on my mind and the thread I was considering making.

16? I'm sorry but that isn't the same thing as a curious 11 yr old taking things too far. You knew what you were doing.

Everyone has freaky sexual desires. But to act on some of them isnt cool. I had a girlfriend with serious father issues who used to call Mr daddy in the bedroom. She would fantasize that I was her father fucking her. But it doesn't mean she goes and fucks her father.

Some people have a furry fetish. But the vast majority are not fucking actual dogs.

I'm glad your life is on the right track and you are seriously lucky. When I was in jail a dude had a yellow wrist band and had an entire cell to himself while we were packed like sardines in the other cells. All the Mexican gang members were signaling to each other to beat the shit out of him should they get cuffed to him for trial.

Keep up the good work but please don't try and act like your crimes were on par with that of a curious child. Own it. Forgive yourself. Don't do it again and move on

I never said such a thing. It was motivated by powerlessness and anger. A similar cycle an addict goes through.

I said nothing to indicate my crimes were on par with a curious child. I do not know what made you think that. I accept full responsibility. There was never any question it was my crime. I would not have been allowed to complete my treatment if I were not able to own this basic fact.

This is worth repeateing. Thank you for sharing with us #7. This is how I was taught as well and how I live my life every day to keep myself from falling back into old behavior patterns.

Can only speak for the program I went through, but at the center of it is understanding your crime. Exactly what led to it. Someone doesn't just wake up one day and decide they're going to rape someone else. There is a lot that leads up to it, such as being raped themselves when they were young, or some other traumatic childhood experience, could be things as small as not getting love when they were a child. There is no one thing that leads to it. I feel the need to point this out so someone doesn't assume I'm saying just because they don't get love as a child, means they will end up raping someone later on. We learn about these triggers, and the other major triggers of other offenders. It takes more than one to lead to an offense. So it's important that when a trigger presents itself I recognize and deal with it. There's a lot of individual and group therapy. A good bit of it also focuses on the victim, the primary goal being to teach empathy. Putting yourself in their shoes so to speak, not just the act I mean the emotional trauma they suffer.

It's not a whole lot different than the type of work people were doing for their drug counseling (the facility I was in also had a long-term inpatient drug treatment program) in a lot of respects. The 12 thinking errors gets hammered in our head constantly for instance.

Getting a job I think is what would drive me nuts. I have a rough time finding work work with an expunged misdemeanor. I can't imagine with a sex charge.

I made that OP, and just to clarify I wanted to get the Shroomery community's opinion on such a thing. I actually just read it in some crime novel. I'm definitely not capable of killing.
