tabloids and fear mongering sites are blaming monsanto
-crop dusting inoculation is nothing but more fear mongering like the claims of monsanto suing innocent farmers for patent infringment
-everyone must be evil then based on the douchebaggery

Ah Joie, I really hope you have signed up for a critical thinking class next fall, assuming such classes are still offered in modern institutionalized education facilities.

In the meantime, here's today's free lesson.  Calling the kind of genetic modifications that accompany millions of years of evolution to those that occur over several years in a for-profit laboratory is so mind-bogglingly ignorant it is almost beyond words.

And no Joie, just like when I called you out on your ad honimem recently, just because you genuinely believe it, doesn't mean you aren't perpetuating an argumentative fallacy.

Please do point out my fallacy then, rather than linking to some wikipedia article you think supports your argument.

Why don't you take a class in evolution, genetics, molecular biology, genetic engineering, biotechnology or synthetic biology and then come back to me and maybe you'll be qualified to understand what we're talking about. A critical thinking class doesn't tell you ANYTHING about biological principles of life, how evolution works or how synthetic biology works.:rolleyes:

Genetic modification is a natural process that cells do on their own. Evolution is a process of trial and error. There is no thought behind it, no intelligence, no predictions, no modification of process based upon collected data. Saying that intelligent beings spending years researching the same process and implementing it on their own with the guidance of intelligence and multiple perspectives is somehow worse than a natural process dictated by chaos and chemical reactions is ridiculous and fallacious.

Instead of acting condescending, why don't you point out exactly why it is so mind-bogglingly ignorant?
(And don't link to some nutter site please).

I've got to side with Senor Doobie on this. You don't need more than basic common sense to realize that humans fucking with processes that nature has taken millions of years to accomplish can and likely will end badly in ways we can't even imagine. I'm sorry if FDA/EPA approval after a couple of years of research isn't convincing me differently.

Like computing? Like modern medicine? Yeah, the random chaos of nature always does things much better than a group of highly organized and cognitive organisms working together with years of accumulated knowledge and technological feats at their disposal.

I hate the hippie "nature does it best" nonsense. We are nature. Nature itself as a whole tends towards entropy which means chaos and disorder which means that generally life does things better than nature as a whole because life organizes things and puts them to work for a greater good.

You do need much more than "common sense" because you don't even realize we're just speeding up a completely natural and safe process. There's no such thing as "common sense," or some inherited sense of knowledge anyway there's just an individualized sense that is incredibly biased by your own subjective experiences and assumptions. Knowledge and education allow you to understand commonly accepted things and really have a more common, objective sense and understanding of hot button issues like this.

If you don't even know anything about the natural processes you're trying to talk about, so how can you begin to claim that nature does it better?

What specifically do you think we don't have figured out? Do you know all that we do have figured out?

I'm not even suggesting we know everything but nature as a whole doesn't know anything at all.
Cognitive control of a process seems to be intuitively better when compared to the same process controlled by random chemical interactions. I mean, theoretically with our knowledge, control, regulation and technology involved we can avoid mutations that we don't want entirely. Evolution has no intelligent control like that and can easily mutate things harmfully. Evolution does no research before it changes genetic code, but we do exactly that. I don't think you realize just how much we can know about any given genome, down to the alternate splicing mechanisms of the organism and the exact shape and function of the protein produced and the individual amino acids that will turn over into later in the cell and all the effects those will have on the homeostatic balance of the cell.

So I just got out of the doctors office... and was there since 8 p.m. last night

Glad to see some discussion.

I don't think we should let a firm backed by the government fuck with our food and not tell us about it or give us a choice in that say.

Why would you trust a huge corporation like Monsanto and our government?

This could end really badly... like everything else our government has "backed" over the years...

@ Prisoner1 (if I understand how this board operates)

Yeah, that's it. Believe the great and powerful man behind the curtain, just like I did when I was in the Army, stationed at Fort McClellan and was told all the crap in the leaking barrels on base (which was also the biochem training school) was "no big deal". Also no big deal was the MONSANTO factory upstream dumping PCBs and excess Agent Orange and dioxin into the water supply. Now I and thousands and thousands like me have a vast array of VERY REAL diseases.

Monsanto is not your benign uncle out to make your Kap'n Krunch cheaper, cupcake. I'm no Whole Foods shopper (we don't even HAVE one) nor do I jump on every protest bandwagon that comes along, but this GMO issue is real, as rBGH is real (we--as a country--not me--aren't so fat just because we're super-sizing everything). People who move here from other places don't change their diets and GET FAT because of GENETIC ENGINEERING. How do I know this? Oh... only about 16 years of education in biological sciences. I'm only an artist now because I'm too sick to practice my profession!

I never protest but this is one I am considering attending.
My main problem with Monsanto is they a running a monopoly on a large portion of the agricultural industry in the united states.

They patent their varieties so you have to pay them to use those kinds.
However, their products are so heavily grown that the seeds will find a way into your field regardless of you planting them there or not.

Then when Monsanto finds that you have plants of their variety on your land without paying them, they sue you.

Even if they don't have a case, they will still sue just to suck the farmer's money dry; all to send a message to other farmers.
Buy their products, or else the same will happen to you.

And now we have a significant amount of Monsanto employees in the government that are in charge of regulating Monsanto.
This is institutionalized corruption at it's finest.

I rather resent the misogyny implicit in your chosen epithet, which I choose not to repeat, though I have grown used to it coming from you 1% apologist types.

Your repeated efforts notwithstanding, the INDEPENDENT histological studies confirm that Monsanto's products are carcinogenic, teratogenic and result in high rates of morbidity and mortality not only in lab animals (which they test on without shame) but in humans (which they also test on without shame). You may have heard of Agent Orange? That human testing has not gone well at all by anyone's account. I say has not gone well as opposed to did not go well because that issue has not yet been fully resolved. Just ask Fort McClellan vets and the people of Anniston, Alabama.

Sadly, 2,4D and other chemical components of AO are carried forward AT LEAST one generation, expressing in neural tube defects in the offspring that are not spontaneously aborted (miscarried) or born dead.

You are of course welcome to your usual glib disavowal of any responsibility on the part of Monsanto, as their attorneys tried and failed to do. Perhaps you're as much the super-expert on all things as you seem to think you are, so go for it. Impress me with your knowledge of the actual facts here, not just talking points and empty hate radio rhetoric!

Of course, working against your "corporations are people and need love too" stance are these troublesome things called facts, and they show that cause/effect was made crystal clear in Tolbert v Monsanto and the following mass action lawsuit Anniston v Monsanto/Solutia/Pharmacia.
I am quite certain teeny little Anniston, AL won in court based on preponderance of evidence, not because they could afford better lawyers than corporate Titan Monsanto! (My turn to laugh at that prospect/excuse!)

Monsanto does so love to change names when in court--just as one of their other companies, BLACKWATER profiteers, I mean mercenaries, I mean no bid contractors changed their name to Xe while members were on trial (and convicted) of rape and murder of American citizens as well as countless Iraqi men, women and children during the W. Bush administration.

Good luck, talking kitty. I can hardly wait to hear how all the once  young and healthy and now sick and dying men and women who volunteered in good faith to serve their country and were then knowingly exposed to toxic levels of Agent Orange, PCBs and dioxin, etc., etc., etc., are NOT really sick or dead at all. Mothers to be did not suffer miscarriage after miscarriage and did were not forced to undergo hysterectomies in their twenties and thirties. No one is suffering cancers, heart disease, diabetes and other autoimmune disease or poorly understood and untreatable massive changes on the mitochondrial level,  and they are not passing genetic damage on to their offspring! WONDERFUL!

I want to hear all about our benign Uncle Monsanto and how he's only looking out for our best interests and those of every nation he rapes and pillages in a never ending quest to increase an already unimaginably obscene profit margin...I mean helps us all toward a brighter and healthier tomorrow.

That image is what makes me facepalm at the absurdity and ignorance of the anti-gmo crowd. If anything, GMO produce uses LESS chemicals. Where is the screaming and crying at all the other herbicide companies that produce herbicides for spraying on hybrids? And Monsanto is far from the only herbicide / GMO company. Sure, Monsanto is a shitty company, but they are NO different than any of the other huge companies and their business practices are all the same. Monsanto is far from the only one. It just seems it's the "cool" thing to hate on Monsanto.
Do your research people. Don't be ignorant. For a set of people that claim to be different than the main populace and "think for themselves", you are exactly like the sheep you claim to be different from.

Altering the genes of one species by adding genes from an entirely different species is not always something that will happen in nature.  They are bridging gaps that are seperated for a reason  we do not know the full effects of gmo's, so why claim they are harmless.  Has anyone here heard of their correlation with "leaky gut" and how gmos can effect the bacteria in oir stomachs?  a

Anyway, this march is more about requiring labels and keeping the monster that has become Mansanto in check.

And at whoever said organic farming is unsustainable, you must be a fool.  Otherwise, with your logic, the human species would not have survived for thousands of years before we started modifying genes and using pesticides.

You really do not know the first thing about how GMOs work. This is the ignorance I was talking about earlier. GMOs are not made by splicing an entirely different species - that doesn't work in nature.
You can read the earlier posts in this thread regarding this issue. The following thread has some info (skepticblog) on how GMOs are made to give you a brief overview of the science behind them.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18226897#18226897

Quote:

GMOs have been around for 20+ years now.. There have never been any reputable studies indicating they are unsafe - just the opposite in fact.
Besides which, understanding the science of how it works will show you that there really isn't anything to fear.

Quote:
Has anyone here heard of their correlation with "leaky gut" and how gmos can effect the bacteria in oir stomachs?  a

No I have never heard of this from any credible study. Besides which, one of the first things you learn as a scientist is the old adage, correlation is not causation. It has to have actual reproducible data behind it.

Quote:

Organic farming isn't sustainable at all, and can never be. Of course the human species survived, but think of the population differences between then and now. Back hundreds of years ago, everyone grew food, the population was immensely smaller, and everyone was able to be supported. But that isn't the case now. If you want to make a difference - stop having kids - but amusingly, those who claim they are concerned about the environment keep on popping out babies like a factory.
