I've hiked over 25% of the Appalachain Trail
    #5620363 - 05/12/06 08:27 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I'm in Virginia now, I hear it's beautiful but I wouldn't know, all I've seen is fog and rain, today is gorgeous but I'm sitting in a public library instead of hiking

Everyone needs a day off sometime.

Picture time is coming up.

that's really fucking awesome... good luck on the rest of your trip!  if i remember correctly (it's been about 5yrs since i read a guide), you should be coming into or just leaving some pretty hardcore steeps and boulders, right?

i'm jealous.

tha AT and PCT are on my 'to-do before death' lists...

My plan now is to be a triple crowner by the time in 35 that gives me 10 more years.

Virginia is pretty mellow hiking, I've already hiked all the highest peaks on the trail, there's longer ascents coming up but not untill I cross the mason dixon line. I don't have any elevation maps handy but I'm sure this state is pretty tame, I've been pulling 20 milers like crazy lately. N.C. had some good steeps but I really haven't seen anything all that crazy yet.

You going to the gathering? I'm thinking of taking a vacation from the trail and coming with Jim and getting crazy for a few days.

I'm not sure.  Life is really topsy turvy for me right now. I havent worked for 1.5 weeks and got nothing lined up for Monday. :frown:  Rent is too iffy right now to be planning a trip to Ohio.  Sucks.

It's gotten real rocky lately, most of the time it's mud though, it's rained like 15 of the last 20 days out here!

I fell off a bridge last week, fell six feet into a rocky stream shooting down the mountian, it was a log bridge that was soaking wet and slick, somehow I lost my footing and went tumbling. I ended up with my arms pinned in my hiking poles, which were under me, my feet sticking up the mountain, laying on my pack all while a stream ran down the crack of my ass. I probably should of been hurt but I only ended up with some minor scraps and a bruised knee.

I've only seen one bear and that was in the Smokies.

Last week I started finding morels all over, I picked a few handfulls a couple of times. I pick ramps all the time, they are a onion like wild plant that taste like garlic, delicious addition to any trail food.

You should hike NJ > ME with me man, I need a photographer for when I hit Katahdin.

Bear that roved into Jersey cities shot dead in a backyard

ASSOCIATED PRESS

May 11, 2006

IRVINGTON, N.J. -- A 300-pound black bear that had been wandering urban New Jersey for two days was shot and killed by police Wednesday in a backyard on the edge of Newark after it reared up and appeared set to charge, authorities said.

Seven shotgun blasts rang out and the bear slumped to the ground in the small yard where it had been cornered.

The animal apparently had come from the countryside to the west, and its rambles had included Newark and Irvington -- two of the state's most densely populated areas.

Before the bear was killed, police chased three or four youngsters from nearby yards, and they worried because more than 1,000 neighborhood children would soon be walking home from school.

"Good God almighty!" Wanda Williams said upon learning a bear had been spotted on her street. "Why would a bear want to be in Newark?"

Jim Osorio, an animal control officer who gave the order to shoot, said he was ready to fire a tranquilizer dart before the bear assumed an aggressive position. Two officers opened fire with shotguns.

"He was jumping 6-foot fences like they were little curbs," Irvington Deputy Police Chief Steven Palamara said.

Last Saturday, a black bear captured in downtown Trenton was the first to be killed as part of the state's no-tolerance policy on bears in urban areas.

Naw they are tame! I been up close and personal with them my whole life. I am not scared of them one bit. Just got to take bear hangs seriously. Watch out in blue berry thickets on the trail and bogs in the valleys. Those are bear hang outs, that and where the camps are along the trail. The have designated bear hang places. The trees are wraped with tin. You can see the punctures and claw marks 8 feet up the tree.

The bears are thick and plentiful. But they get along very well with the 8 million people in NJ. Unless you get mad if they eat your trash or steal your bird feeder. But i think they are funny and welcome around my yard any day.

Every day is crazy, not like stupid almost hurt yourself crazy though. It's just crazy passing hikers and being passed by others you won't see one for ages then all of the sudden you catch up to them or they pop up behind you. Trading stories and trail talk about whats to come. People here just give us hikers stuff all the time, a group of folks I know got 100$ bill handed to them just to go to the bar and tye one on. I haven't had anything that crazy but stuff like that happens all the time, a couple friends of mine got taken out to eat this morning by a friendly local. I hitch hike and get rides from all kinds of strangers who just love to talk and ask questions about the trail. Every day is different, you never knwo what the fuck is going to happen

Yeah man... that's awesome. I'm glad you've made it so far.. I'm rooting for you to make it to Katahdin

Who knows.. maybe I'll be there with you. I really need to do some hiking this summer.. and I'd love to accompany you. Not sure if I'm prepared though.. or maybe I'm over-prepared. Either way I have to see what my schedule is like... I have festivals to work and whatnot :smirk:

Maybe I can catch you in the northern end.. I'd really love to see Vermont and Maine.

Hope the weather clears up for you soon... I think it will.. you really are going through a very beautiful area. I hear it just gets more and more beautiful the further you go, though. That area does get a lot of rain in the spring.. but it is well rewarded.... you will see why as the days go by

Happy trails  :mushroom2:

I'd really love to hike with you man but I must mention the fact that I'm really not willing to slow down for more than 4 or 5 days and unless you are used to hiking I doubt you'll be up for my pace. I don't want to detour you from hiking with me because I'd love it but I don't want you to come out thinking we'll hike together all the time either. I couldn't of pulled a 20 miler to save my life in my first month and now I do them while taking massive breaks all day.

I would really love to hike together but after a few days I'm probably going to want to pull 20-25 and will be pulling 15-19 on regular days, if you are up to it that's beautiful but I don't want to push anyone to the point of terrible shin splints, blisters and knee problems.... I really would love hiking with anyone from this place but I just need to make clear the fact that I'm in prime shape and really won't want to slow down for any long length of time. Keep in mind I started out doing 8-12 for the first month and it took the 6 week mark for me to actually enjoy doing 20....

Ya that's cool.. I understand.  Hadn't even considered that by then you'd probably be pushing 25 mile days and you'd probably just smoke me :stoned: I'm in good shape but not carrying 40lbs on my back and hiking 20 a day good shape. It takes conditioning that's for sure. But yeah maybe I will go for my 2000 miler next year..

My perspective on this trail has completely changed in the last few weeks, I could give to hoots about miles now. If you want to come hike, then come and we'll hike together. Miles don't matter, the journey does and I think we'd have a blast together so if you want to come you are more than welcome. Marathon hiking was fun for a couple weeks but I was missing things because I wanted to get 20 in and that's just not what I'm here for anymore.

I made 955.5 this morning and still trucking hard. Seen 6 bears in Shenandoah, along with a fox, countless deer and fawns and a few rattle snakes. Nice park. This morning I rolled into Front Royal around 7 am, after going to k-mart I was walking to the laundry mat and a guy came running up to me to ask how my hike was going, I told him just perfect and it couldn't be better, then he told me to hold out my hand and he placed a gram or two of very nice dank in my palm. I got all bug eyed and thanked him and he ran off, every day is a new suprise!

arc tercx bora 80. way to big and heavy for this trail.. I should have something about 1500 cubic inches smaller. It weighs 6lbs and carryings 5,000+. I just didn't know what I was doing when I came out here.. I'm trying to get my brothers gregory and go ulta-light for the summer but not sure I can talk him out of it..

Glad to hear you're still going strong.

I've finally figured out my camera now also and my last two hundred pictures are so much better than those I posted, I just don't have time to deal with all the stuff right now.

I checked out some of your pics and they are awesome. I'm doing a short 20 miler this summer through the Chicago Basin in CO. I need a smaller pack too- mine is an osprey crescent 110. I'll probably go ahead and use it anyway and bring a daypack as well because I plan to stay up in the basin for a few days. Can't wait.

If you liked those my next batch we'll be mighty impressive. I stated night hiking so I could get to some good sunrises and I captured some amazing pictures. Also have had a lot more waterfalls, strange rock formations, ect... I might squeeze time in this afternoon to put some up just to show them off ...
