I dont want that shit in my food.

Over 8% of your own genetic code has been directly modified by viruses. The rest of your DNA has all been modified by evolution. This also goes for every currently living organism, including plants. All "real food" of today has been genetically modified for millions of years.

You literally have no idea what you're talking about, which would be fine if you weren't so adamant about it.

Some day I'm going to grow a bunch of GMO food that is enhanced for taste and nutritional value. Then I'm going to make a huge delicious meal for a bunch of hippies and reveal to them that it was GM after they eat it.

And yeah I hate Monsanto for their business practices but I'm very strongly pro-GMO. Because I can actually understand genetic modification.

hopefully someone intelligent can share a discussion with me about this and talk about what they're doing with the group in their town/city.

You evidently did not study your biology too well if you don't understand the science behind GMOs..
I would LOVE to read your papers on this topic - by all means link them..

When did I say "All GMOs are bad and this is what this thread is about"???

I know very well what GMOs are... and not all are bad. This thread is about other things... like requiring labeling in supermarkets, and how pesticide companies sell stuff that's illegal in the US to other countries like costa rica and mexico cause its either not illegal or not regulated properly...

for example, we organically and sustainably grow our own bananas here in SWFL because the Dole supermarket varieties are grown with heavy pesticide use in Mexico and Costa Rica that has made many of their domestic and foreign workers sterile and shit and has ruined the health and biodiversity of coastal inland ecosystems

please stay off of this thread unless you have something to contribute to the conversation.

And you're a mod... you should be setting an example and not flaming.

Maybe this thread is in the wrong place? I don't come to the pub much... so please tell me now if me and my topic is not welcome here.

I didn't realize this was the flaming forum...

When did I say I'm more intelligent than everyone? I was just throwing out my experience so that flamers like you can be like "oh, he's not just some hippy stoner kid who doesn't understand this topic"...

I assume you opted out of the rating system because you're a troll and a flamer.

You're currently spewing shit on a thread just to be an asshole.

Please stop.

I'm looking forward to what others have to say about the march on the 25th in their town/city... also up for intelligent discussion about what's going on.

I'm not scared and misinformed... I think you may be misinformed. People like me will stand up and fight for yours and your family's rights to safe and healthy food while you're asleep and apathetic.

sVs, you have no idea what I do in school. What we're studying and what we do after school is actually decently prestigious and respected in society and in the scientific community.

What I actually do is study sustainability and conservation, remove exotic and invasive species, educate children and lead elementary school hike in local nature parks, and I'm working towards my permaculture design certification...

I mean well. I don't understand the hostility on here.

Well the citrus industry is forced to use pesticides these days. citrus canker and greening are huge problems, and according to my friends at the USDA here in SWFL, if we don't find a way to get rid of these pests (many of which originate in China and shit), the south FL citrus industry will basically collapse in 10 or 15 years.

Plant quarantine technicians are good people to know... and they can also bring you some HUGE Ganoderma from the groves haha... which is another problem in itself... :strokebeard:

It's upsetting to think that these pesticides have basically just bottlenecked pest populations, and the surviving members have genes that make them resistant... we're creating super bugs, you know?

By supporting Monsanto and their pesticides, our national food industry is getting dangerously close to relying on chemicals and GMOs. Many GMOs, in plant varieties that is, aren't as healthy for you and because they require all kinds of pesticides, they aren't sustainable.

Also, the whole ordeal takes a serious toll on natural ecosystems and their water quality. That's a huge deal in south Florida.

Does anyone else have anything to say about citrus? I've never heard much about California if anyone knows anything about what's going on there.

Ok - you are going off on a tangent. You realize that most GMO food allows LESS pesticide / herbicide use? So not really sure what the pesticide companies are doing in your rant about GMOs.
How does Monsanto have anything to do with labeling in the supermakets?? You made a thread saying "March against Monsanto" - so what are you upset about Monsanto for? For being another corporate company? Monsanto may not be the best company in the world but it's the way most companies are

Organic food is not sustainable. As someone who "has a major in biology" you should know this.

Monsanto is NOT the only pesticide or herbicide company - there are many many more, and larger ones.

A lot of the genetic modifications change the expression of proteins in a way that decreases the amounts of pesticides required.

What do you want to know specifically? Most people seem to think that genetic modification is splicing random genes all willy-nilly. But in reality it is a highly controlled process of reverse transcription of specific genes that are of well-known functions and genetic interactions. Read about how five patients had their cancers cured (or at least extremely restricted) using new genetic modification practices:
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/cancer-halted-in-five-patients-after-treatment-with-own-genetically-modified-cells-8544693.html
