Actually many do try to walk to Europe. The majority aim for Spain because if they can make it there then they are allowed to travel freely throughout Europe. Most are turned back or even killed by the local forces within the intermittent African countries on the way, and then many end up dying on their way through the Sahara. After that they need to get across the border into Spain which isn't easy.
