LAS VEGAS -- A battle is brewing over a new Las Vegas ordinance that bans providing food or meals to the indigent at city parks.
The Las Vegas City Council unanimously passed a law, which went into effect Thursday, making it a crime to feed the homeless at city parks. It carries a maximum penalty of $1,000 and six months in jail.
The law bans giving away or selling food to anyone who could get assistance from official sources under state law, and officials said city marshals will get specialized training to enforce it.
The city's mayor, Oscar Goodman, dismissed questions about how marshals will identify the homeless so that they can enforce the ordinance.
"Certain truths are self-evident," Goodman said. "You know who's homeless."
Marshals recently began arresting the homeless in parks under a campaign to force people who are unable or unwilling to care for themselves to get mental help.
City officials call the measure an attempt to stop so-called "mobile soup kitchens" from attracting the homeless to parks.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada calls it unconstitutional, unenforceable and the latest attempt by the city to hide and harass the homeless instead of constructively addressing their plight.
"So, the only people who get to eat are those who have enough money? Those who get (government) assistance can't eat at your picnic?" asked ACLU attorney Allen Lichtenstein, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "I've heard of some rather strange and extreme measures from other cities. I've never heard of something like this. It's mind-boggling."
One advocate for the homeless said she will continue to feed the homeless, despite being cited twice already.
"I'm going to do whatever I think is necessary to keep people alive," Gail Sacco told the paper.
She said her previous citations came while she was feeding the homeless for holding a gathering of 25 or more people without a permit.

I say get 5,000 people and a crew of caterers aware of the possible consequences and peacefully feed the homeless. Veal, filet mignon, the works. Then, perhaps, open up a soup kitchen right across the street from every public park via donations and volunteers.
What politician would attempt to strike down a soup kitchen? Besides, they probably want to give their butt buddies the construction contract anyway.

America is sending tons upon tons of food to underdeveloped countries, yet our own people - our own blood - are starving in the streets.
America FTW!

I find this interesting--has this happened other places as well? Because I read in the local paper this AM that a shelter got served with a notice for providing showers and laundry. Okay? Like, I did not make that up. Completely serious. The city actually complained that the homeless shelter helped the street people wash. WTF people.

It's what you get for having republicans running this country.
Granted, we need the imperialism because we are no longer a producing nation.
However, George Washington himself warned of the dangers of political parties.
Look what it's doing to our goddamn country. You can see it in the paper, you can see it in social stratification, and you can hear it when asking your fellow countrymen how they feel about current events.
Once I get my bank + degree, I'm seriously out of here. I don't care if 'free health care' in Canada 'sucks' (as noted by other users), I'd rather not deal with this shit.
The empire will fall. Especially with this religious/holy war shit. GW made a BIG fuckup going against Islamic extremists and using Catholicism to backup his claims/followers.
I would never harm this country -- I know a lot of people here who feel the exact same way -- I just want out. ASAP. Before shit hits the fan.
We can't even take care of our own people! WTF is this?!?

Sick. Twisted. Unimaginable. But these are things you come to expect when dealing with politicians.
What's the difference between a politician and a bucket filled with shit?
The bucket.

Ha!
Politicians are somewhat misguided, that is for sure.
I can only imagine it pisses off the powers that be aiding people not generating a whole lot of taxable income, as they make lousy consumers.

OMG, I can't beleive I read that...
So basically, if I go break bread with someone out on the street now... it's punishable by law, should I live in said location...
What about the homeless people that are homless because AMERICA IS FUCKED UP and they can't stand giving in to the man, by holding a real "job" and not living on the streets.. WTF would these people need "mental help"
Ughhh... I feel a migrane comming on....

the truth is a large percentage of homeless people are mentally ill and recieve no treatment. if they can't hold a job because they can't force them selve to give in to the man, well i guess that is not ill, but to each thier own.
