Linking Routers & Private Wi-Fi
    #18206675 -

Currently right now I have a wired network. My mother has a Kindle and she wants to be able to connect to Wi-Fi and browse the Kindle store.

On my current network I have my Xbox and 2PCs connected with one open port available.
Can I link another router of the wireless kind to that port? Or should I just replace the current router with a new one of the wireless capable kind?

With the Wireless routers, how might I go about setting it up so its private and password protected? Since I share media and music between the 2 PCs and Xbox and dont want nosey neighbors accessing internet for free or intruding on my files.

I'm sure this is simple but I'm a total :hank: with this stuff and wish to be secure.

Thanks for the help Shroomery

PS: Also any router recommendations for the devices mentioned would be great. I currently have an ancient linksys befrs41 and have a budget of $80 or so for new equipment

You can connect the wireless access point to the free port on your existing router.
Most wireless access points/routers come with a guide of how to set up wireless security or even a wizard that helps you do it.
If you buy a wireless router (instead of an access point), make sure the devices connected wireless are part of the same IP subnet as your wired computers, otherwise you can't share data between the wireless and the wired devices. For that reason, it might be easier to replace your existing router with a router with wireless capability; that scenario doesn't bring this particular problem since all devices will connect to the same (wireless) router.
