think about the the difference between trying to censor someone and simply pointing out that what they're saying is douchey as fuck.

like if you started spouting neo-nazi bullshit, i personally would not try to stop you from saying it by force. but i will certainly call you an asshole and talk mad shit to you. does that make me "PC police"? and would it be reasonable for you to defend your words simply by saying it's an exercise of free speech? sure it would justify your right to say such things, but would that alone serve as good enough of a reason for you to say them? no, you'd still be an asshole, and not just because i'm some oversensitive PC pansy.

so assholes aren't allowed to be assholes anymore?
my freedom to say something, anything is not a good enough reason to say it?
see I think it is, whether for no reason at all, in protest, out of stupidity or anything in between.
there is a bold line between vocally disagreeing with and suppressing viewpoints.
you calling me an asshole and talking mad shit wouldn't make you the PC police.
if you petitioned your elected or otherwise leaders to prevent me from speaking or otherwise freely communicating my message and they agreed to do so you and they then would be. it hasn't been much of an issue because many people have no desire to listen to borderline hate or fringe speech and simply tune it out or protest against it. forgive me if I'm extra vigilant in protecting all varieties of non violent speech.

i hope its not the case that he actually thought thats what i was saying, because then he would not only be missing the entire point of what i posted, but would have to possess one of the most pathetic levels of reading comprehension skill of anyone i have ever met to be able to construe such a meaning. i specifically told him that i don't believe in censorship nor would i try to censor him if he was saying asshole shit.

I'm right here, why resort to third person insults when you could just quote my last post and show me where you disagree

no hostility here man.

the part implying you not being able to read was only if you meant your post the way that i interpreted. which basically ignored the opening disclaimer that began the post. basically, because right after i said i wouldn't want to censor you, you asked "so assholes can't be assholes anymore?"

didn't mean to basically call you retarded, but can you see why i had to imply the possibility of such a thing there?

I don't use it that often. It just doesn't have the same flow to it that fuck and shit do. Once and awhile it sounds alright.
Cunt is just hard to work with and not fuck up the flow of whatever you're saying. It's not nearly as versatile as my usual repertoire of profane words, either.
It is a very angry, passionate sounding word, though. But I seldom raise my voice in person, and it lacks that emphasis if you're quietly saying cunt rather than screaming it at the top of your lungs.

Ya clearly never been to fucking Straya then have ya cunt?

No. At least the PC crowd tries to do good, even if it often ends up in unintended failure.

Far more annoying are those who defend and even crusade for the deliberately politically incorrect and antisocial agenda just because they can (or because they are bored or genuinely malicious), those who glorify the jerk and villify the do-gooder.

You incorporate a motive that likely is irrelevant to this discussion in your criticism of those who criticize.  This straw man doesn't represent the actual reasons reasonable people think PC nonsense harmful: it promotes form over substance, hides ugly aspects of the culture, makes it difficult to communicate with people, and essentially restricts the ability of people to work out the very differences the PC crowd likely thinks they're addressing.

Its an arrogant knee-jerk reaction to problems that need to be addressed directly.  Instead we get all this eupemism and soft language and condmenation so that many people don't even want to discuss issues of bigotry at all in any serious way lest they be accused of offending someone.

The end is a complete breakdown of conversation amongst all but the hardcore bigots who simply don't care and those who make their living off complaining about bigotry, real or imagined: sharpton, jackson, et cet.

I say this again:  PC is a thinly veiled attempt at oppressing other peoples viewpoints.  It is merely an attempt to get people to not voice opinions that are contradictory to what the 'collective' wants.

This is true; there are people who use political correctness as a weapon to shut down conversation and smear people that dare stand up.

Anyway, I've said this before and I'll probably say it again: you do not need freedom of speech to protect polite speech. This is directed especially to WS; everyone has a right to speak their minds and express their views. If you don't like it then walk away.

As do I.

The world would be a much better place if what people expressed were actually their views and not making what comes out of their mouth or rattles out of their keyboard a mere means to the goal of offending people.

Freedom of speech exists so that people can voice their heart's content, not so that trolls can say anything they can think of to offend and attack people.

that's bullshit. freedom of speech exists exactly because you should be allowed to say anything you want including words with the sole intention of offending me.  anything short of that and lines have to be drawn.  the speaker doesn't control the reaction of the listener.  I'm surprised at how many people in this thread are willing to compromise because someone's feelings might get hurt by the big bad trolls.

dude. you're not understanding me or wiccan seeker. nobody's trying to compromise your first amendment rights. if someone tried to outlaw the word nigger i would be at the front lines of the free speech protest yelling NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER NIGGER because i believe in free speech. but you will never see me just spouting that word off for no reason other than to offend someone. now, that word specifically brings up a whole other issue of whether to say "the n-word" when you're simply referring to the word itself or recounting a story of someone who used the word. and personally, i think it's ridiculous that anyone would censor themselves in that situation. if you're telling a story to someone about some redneck that called a black guy a nigger, don't feel the need to say "and that racist asshole called him the N-word!" because that's just stupid. but i would NEVER call somebody a nigger, simply because it's a shitty thing that only a shitty person would do.

Exactly. Just because you shouldn't be punished for saying a word, or prevented from saying it, doesn't mean saying that word is perfectly fine and acceptable and that everyone else just has to deal with it.

I like to add to that: Its not about the word its about the intent and context. Not all intents and contexts are created equal in merit and appropriateness.

Saying nigger in the context of "the redneck called him a nigger" and actually calling a black person a nigger are two entirely different things. Freedom of speech protects the fist use but not the second.

Lets talk about YES.

Does freedom of speech protect your right to shout YEEE-EEES!!
I believe it does.

Here is what happens when someone seizes the opportunity to shout YEEE-EEES! during the two minutes of silence of the National Commemoration of the Dead of WW2 on the Dam square in Amsterdam:

Many people were wounded and trampled by the ensuing panic.

To say this man has the right of freedom of speech to do that is nonsense. Its all about intent and context.
