losing my memory
    #1810600 - 08/13/03 05:24 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

i run a 600speed pentium3 processor with a 20GB hard drive using XP as an operating system. RAM is only 128, and there's nothing that i have that eats up power or computer brains. i had no problems until really recently the bastard slowed right down. somehow i am using 19GB of the hard disc, thoough i can't find where it all is. :shake:

it's too full to defragment. i've used cleanup, and removed anythin i don't use, but no dice. 'my documents' comes to about 3GB. no help in add/remove programs, or by looking at the size of all the folders in the C (hard) drive. it just doesn't add up. any tips or suggestions welcomed gratefully.

Internet temp files?

Too much pr0n?

Anyway that computer is discraceful and should be thrown in the river, or at least given to an underprivledged black child.

Oh yeah, xp runs like poo with 128mb of ram.

Also, reformatting can do wonders sometimes.

If you're running a firewall like Zone Alarm you may have it set to keep logs. I had the same problem a few months back, I kept losing more and more disk space and I didn't know why. Then I found out that Zone Alarm had 6gigs of logs on my C drive. Any program you can think of that might be keeping logs may be doing this (IRC client?).

search for *.* over 1 meg, and you'll see EVERYTHING. Delete what you don't need.

not sure if this will help you out since your memory is quite low, but its worth a shot.

If defragging takes too long to complete (say if it runs for days on end without going past 2%), try this trick:

- start> run > type misconfig
- on the "general tab," click on "selective startup"
- uncheck all options
- restart your computer
- defragment
- go back to misconfig and re-check all the options
- restart

'msconfig' not 'misconfig'

Boot from the XP CDROM, and go into the recovery console (make sure it is installed first) by pressing 'R' at the first screen that you can (before you hit F8 to accept the licence agreement, there is another 'R' for repair mode after the license page... this is not what you want!). Then run chkdsk /p and see if that fixes your problem. If not, try chkdsk /r.

As somebody else pointed out, 128M with WinXP is painful at best. WinXP is a memory hog. It does a bit better at 256M, though it really likes 512M. My Win2k box running at 1.2GHz with 256M is faster than my WinXP box runnning at 2GHz with 512M. Go figure... of course my Solarix x86 box, with 128M and a 500MHz cpu blows both of the others two windows installs out of the water.

When I interned with MS, they gave us the best, fastest, latest machines to use for development. We never had to worry about our code being bloated or slow on older machines, because we didn't ever run anything on older machines.

Sorry, I know that doesn't help but the losing my memory line triggered that thought.

Click "Start", click Find/Search

Copy the following into the box:

*.bak;*.gid;*.tmp;*.old

Click find, and delete everything it finds.

Actually, I had the same problem a few months ago. After checking the XP newsgroups, it seems a lot of people did. It turns out that Security Update 811493 (Issued May 2003) was the culprit. After removing it, I noticed my computer was performing much better. Just something to consider..
(EDIT: Oh yes..deleting this update will NOT compromise your security. Whilst not admitting they screwed up with this one, Micro$oft addressed and fixed this in later updates.)

Get MemTurbo- It allows you to defrag your RAM when it gets low.

> You don't need to defrag ram because it's dynamic memory.

A user typically doesn't need to worry about RAM fragmentation, but an OS designer certainly does. "Dynamic Memory" refers to the technology used to implement the storage of bits within the memory chip. The term has nothing at all to do with memory fragmentation. Static ram can become fragmented just as easily as dynamic memory.
