Try O&O Defrag here - its commercial so you either gotta pay or be a pirate type, but the download is good for 30 days. Its by far the best... quick, customizable and effective.

Definitely Diskeeper. And I don't know what people are talking about it's totally free.
Make sure to set up an ifast defrag job in addition to smart scheduling.

I'm no fan of closed source or Win but once you've crossed to the dark side I would have to recommend DiskKeeper, it truly does the job without getting in the way.

The diskeeper is great, and I do use it. It just takes up a lot of time and resources if you have large drives.
I like Ashampoo's Magic defrag. It runs in the background when your system idles. You don't even know it's there. Great for maintianing your system, without having to even think about it.
I won't post a link, but if anyone wants it, just PM me.

This has been vastly improved in recent versions, especially 9 and 10.

Yes, diskeeper 10 is much better than the older versions. But 300+ gigs of hard drive still takes some time Even running the magic defrag, I still like to give my drives the once over with diskeeper 10 every 4 months or so.

I don't play in the microsoft world, except when forced, but I thought with NTFS that defrag would no longer be needed. I know on unix file systems, defrag can actually decrease performance of the disk. Since NTFS is basically an embrace and destroy style theft of the unix file system, I am surprised that NTFS still uses/needs to be defragged.

Hehe I didn't know that journaled file systems were the exclusive property on the *nix world. I admit ignorance here but I thought NTFS predated ReiserFS and offered encryption and compression you can't do with ext2.
Anyway Executive Software has a lot of good white papers on the subject of fragmentation in Windows (as long as you remember they want to sell you defrag software). Here's one on NTFS fragmentation.

The basic design of the Unix file system predated ReiserFS by about 20 years. I wasn't speaking of journaling, but rather extent based file systems as opposed to allocation table based file systems. When correctly designed and implemented, an extent based file system is not constrained by fragmentation like an allocation table based file system.
Speaking of compression on file systems, I seem to remember another lawsuit against microsoft when they stole the compressed disk stuff from disk doubler back in the mid 1990's. Gotta love the MS concept of innovation.
Thanks for the links to the whitepapers. I will take a browse tonight when I get home from work.
