Offered to be the Caretaker of a Ranch

So I recently got an offer to be the Caretaker of a Horse Ranch that is currently being built.
The Ranch is going to mostly be taking in horses who's owners couldn't care for them.
We'll be rehabilitating the horses back into good health, and re-breaking them when needed.
I'm pretty sure we'll be doing some occasional breeding as well.

The owners of the ranch are family friends, which is how I initially got the offer. They know I have a good bit of experience with horses, and seem to trust me well enough.

What I am interested in knowing is:
What is a fair salary to ask for as a caretaker of a ranch?

I was thinking of what kind of terms I would ask for.
My main concern is having my living expenses paid for.
Honestly, with living expenses paid; I'd be happy receiving $200 a week.

Though these people are fairly wealthy, and this position will be taking up at least 40 hours a week.

What do you guys think?

Yeah, I'm definitely doing it.
I just want to make sure I get a fair living situation in the process.

I just spent all day out on the land helping clean it up.
I'm fucking excited to live in the country on some beautiful land with horses sheep and chicken that I'm taking care of.

I don't have experience with horse ranches, nor do I know about appropriate wages in your area.

With that said, my words are only that.

You already have indicated your "low number". 200 a week. The polite thing to do in your situation is to wait for their offer, take a day to think about it, and then proceed.

What are your average living expenses now? What kind of lifestyle will you inherit as you accept this job? What is all that worth to you?

It's all relative really. I know dudes who would suck a d for a chance to live there free. You might not be desperate like that. What are your other options and how much do they pay?

It's a sick game really, but you should assess the whole situation. Try to remember that money isn't everything but everyone thinks it is. :heartpump:

If you're working 40 hours a week at a job you should accept no less than $1000/week.

You work 20-25 hours a week on a farm as a caretaker, and you make 700+ bucks a week?

Working on a farm is way different than working any other kind of job as far as wages go. Generally you aren't paid by the hour. You are a salaried employee. I haven't worked on a ranch in a long time, but when i did i lived on the farm, and normally ate meals with the family.

Asking what would be a fair wage would depend on a lot of things. Where the farm was, will you be getting any kind of benefits, what exactly they expect out of you etc.

A caretaker usually has to know how to be a plumber, electrician, at the very least know how to use a cutting torch preferably know how to weld too. Shit is always breaking, and its your job to fix things. a jack of all trades so to speak.

I worked almost 120 hours a week, and made nowhere near 1,000 a week. I have no idea where that figure came from for ranch work. If i were you i would try finding farm work classifieds. See if there is another similar job in your part of the world. If you don't see a rate of pay in the ad, call the guy up, and act interested. See if you can get a pay rate from him, then you will have something to go on.

Sounds like an interesting opportunity, but it will defiantly be a lot of hard manual labor, be sure to make sure you are compensated fairly for your time. $200 a week sounds awfully low that's only $5 an hour. I'd try to get atleast $750-1250'a week depending on all that is involved, and if living expenses are included etc. you could have a blast though a simpler life could be awesome.

So it sounds like the position will be more minimal than I expected.
I wont be the maintenance guy, I'll purely be in charge of the horses.

So basically, I feed them at a set time, and turn them out and bring them in from the pastures.

I think the pay is minimal, but the best part will be the free housing. The land is beautiful and the loft they're having built on the second floor of the barn is gonna be pretty baller.

This all works out well though, because I just got offered to be the manager for the landscaping crew at a mall that is world renowned for it's art and landscaping.
And it's only about 20 minutes from the ranch.
This summer is gonna be fucking awesome :awesome:

Hell yeah!
I've already got an FC with horse poo running, so I'm looking forward to having a nice free supply. :yesnod:

And tons of acres to make outdoor patches! There's several ponds, and a river that runs through the property, so I'm hoping to find some humid spots where I can throw my spent casings.

Not a chance.

This is going to be a horse ranch.
Even though it's 350 acres, people are going to be riding all over the property.
I'm not gonna risk losing this opportunity over some weed.

Mushrooms are easy enough to conceal though.

How is that way different from any other job?  Most good jobs are salaried.
