Aquariums
    #18101024 -

Who else is into aquariums, or has one?
I started one tonight.

Got two black phantom tetra, along with one black skirt tetra, and a single plecostomus.

This is my first planted aquarium to run.
I currently only have a single Amazonian sword plant.

I have everything setup in a 2.5 gallon at the moment, but I'm going to transfer them to a 20 gallon in a few weeks time.
I want the substrate to develop some healthy bacteria first before I go to the bigger tank, so I don't have to worry about ammonia spikes as much.

I got a 10 gallon with 9 or 10 neon and red eye tetra's, and a few feeder guppies. I just to regular filter/water changes and haven't ever worried about the ph/ammonia/etc levels, nothing has died yet.

I also got a betta fish in a 1.5 gallon tank, I wanted to get the betta out of the store because they keep them in tiny little bowls, it should be illegal to sell any type of container under 1 gallon.

i always thought that when iw as rich and famous i was going to get one of those big wall size double sided fish tanks in the middle of a room, and fill it with lots of flourescent and bright white fish, and also fit lots of blacklights into or outside the tank, so when i flip the switch on they all glow in the dark and become luminescent.

i doubt i'll ever spend the money actually doing that, but it would be pretty cool.

i like fish, and watching them swim aroundin acquariums and stuff. they are intriguing.

i tried to make a vivarium a couple years back, didnt work out, had i in a low light area all the plants died, the wood soaked up water, along with the soil soaked up water, the crayfish and the minnows survived, until i disassembled it , and put them in the aquarium with my turtle, now i only got a crayfish ( dont put more then one crayfish in a 40 gallon tank)

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/15290423#15290423

i might try again sometime, but would put a divider wall between the land and water instead of using a bin

I've been in to aquariums for a long time.

I've got a 29 gallon up and running.

What type of pleco did you get?  20 gallon tank is too small for most of them.  You need to do constant water changes in that 2.5 gallon too if it wasn't already cycled.  You can use the filter medium from it to cycle your 20 gallon.

I think me and Gumby have 10-15 yrs experience with freshwater.

I forget if he did african cichlids or salt, too.

Mr Gary Pope in OTD did african peacocks (or still does).

Those tetras need friends and a longer tank. You'll prolly get to 55 if you're into it but a 20 long will make a huge diff. Get iron enriched gravel. Spray bar filter, not box, or god undergravel if they even make them anymore.

Remove activated carbon or it will take iron from the plants.

A small - small - piece of calcium carbonite helps steady pH lvls but it could cause you to become careless in keepup. 7.3-7.5 never hurt anyone for pH tho ppl will disagree with diff experience.

Add plants, win.

Breeding angels and discus is the pinnacle for me. Discus feed their young a slime on their body. They're cichlids like firemouths are but not africans.

Getting colonies of africans going is the tits.

A saltwater done right... Glorius.

Cool thanks for the advice. I dont plan to keep them in the 2.5gallon, this is just to start up a culture for the bacteria.
I'm gonna have to find a new medium for my filter, because the current one I have uses carbon.

Also how often should I be changing the water on the tank since I didn't cycle?

I have a one gallon fishbowl I can keep them in for a little bit while I let the water become balanced.

As for the pleco, I don't know the specific kind.
I know he's going to get way too big for my aquarium, so I plan to donate him to someone else when he gets big enough.
I'm gonna look for a Rhino Plecostomus for my 20 gallon, since I've heard they dont get as big.

I have a 20 gallon tall. Would it make a huge difference to get a 20 gallon long?
I thought the blackskirt and phantom tetras like more depth than length.

...It'd be really helpful if there was a way I could have a live chat with someone knowledgeable. Too many questions to be answered

OKayyyyy

So I went out and bought a 10 gallon.
I transferred all my substrate and plants (bought some wisteria with the 10 gal) into the ten gallon, where I will let them cycle for a week.

In the meantime, I cleaned out the 2.5 gallon and put my fish in there. I'm gonna keep them in there only until I think the 10 gallon is stable.

I also picked up some ghost shrimp for cheap, which I'm gonna throw in the ten gallon.
I figure it might help to have something living in there, and I wont be too upset if the shrimp die.

I'm considering selling my 20 gallon tall, and buying a 30 gallon long.

Your 10 gallon shouldn't need messed with more than once a year as long as your filters are working properly. If they are you don't even need an aerator. and  a 10 is plenty big for tetras as they are gregarious.Just don't put the beta in he will kill every last thing in there. :raisemyglass:

i had a Piranha turn vegetarian once, stopped eating fish and only ate algea pelletes and gold fish/feeder fish food
