What do you guys think of a high speed train connecting New York, Toronto and Chicago?
    #18093477 -

It would probably cost like 500 billion and be a political nightmare, but in the end, I think its would be worth it. There's 15+ million people in these 3 cities alone without taking in consideration the surrounding towns.

So if Harper and Obama announce this high speed train tomorrow, what would you think?
High speed train connecting NY, TO and CHI.

I think that'd be pretty cool but I'm just skeptical the government wouldn't fantastically screw it up.

The government wouldn't build it silly. Illegal immigrants would.

My Amtrak connects where I live (Literally a block away... which is fucking annoying)
to Montreal, and NYC.

60$ a ticket. Pretty sick. Gonna go up to Biodome on my daughters 5th Birthday.

Fuck a highspeed train. What a waste of money... The Amtrak is awesome enough.

Because if you connect chicago toronto and new york, you're automatically connecting Detroit, Buffalo, cleveland, pittsburg, phili and Newark because they are directly on the way.

terrible investment, driving from NY to Chicago, not that damned much time, a
few hours, taking the train is roughly the same length of time, while it goes
slower than 60mph there's no traffic lights to deal with, a high speed train
may make it there in half the time, cost 3x or 4x as much and in the end, it's
the same pile of shit that amtrak has become, another government welfare program

high speed rail from atlanta to new york, new york to los angeles, places like
that would be more sensible because of the distance, NY to LA could have a stop
in chicago, there could be a spur to toronto, vancouver and where ever else.
atlanta could stop in DC and then to NY. the big problem, they now have to
compete with discount airlines and the savings of time suggest the airlines
would win based on time and price

there's been a discussion about this for years but as usual, it's not worth
while it would be more obama spending, he may even call it green
transportation which would probably the the most accurate thing he's called
'green' because trains are pretty efficient

you've just eliminated the high speed and fuel efficiency aspects of the train

What would be some of the practical uses of the train?

Atlanta to Seattle on Amtrak is $414, it's an overnight trip, nearly 24 hours.
Atlanta to Seattle is a 7hr flight and would cost $300, the train is a waste
of money. great if you ant to look out the window and see the country

Not really. It would be roughly one stop per hour and it wouldn't stop for an hour. It would stop just long enough for the drop off and pick of passengers. So roughly 5 minutes. Plus these things accelerate pretty fast so you're back at full speed quickly.

With the stops it would take maybe 3 to 4 hours to go from chicago to New York instead of 12. Airplanes are faster but they are more troublesome.

according to the US DOT there are about 5,800 vehicle train crashes each year
in the United States, there's far fewer plane crashes and the wait time at a
station for a train exceeds 30 minutes because people have to unload, load,
baggage has to be moved, etc... the typical wait time is around 45 minutes,
that's why it takes so long to take a train trip

Seems like it would make more sense to connect the Northeast:  DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia, (maybe Pittsburgh), NYC, and Boston.

There is already existing track most of the way, and being able to travel between all these hubs in an hour or two would allow you to make a truly casual commute among them all.

I thought of the luggage situation. I would put a limit, like nothing more than you can carry. Kinda like a city subway. It would mostly be used for business, not vacations.

EDIT: Or maybe have a train that only does the 3 big cities that would allow luggage. Of course it would cost more per ticket.
