Might be a little more entertaining to hitchhike across america though if you think about it... at least you'd have people to talk to and bum food and money from... the train would be a little lonely 
still would be fun though...

Just make sure you don't get on some high-security/hazmat train that'll poison you and get you arrested for terrorist activity

I did a bunch of research on this a few years back. A friend and I were gonna hop trains across the country for a couple weeks one summer just for fun. It never happened though, but there is quite a community of people who still travel around like this and live as modern-day hobos. And there is a lot of info about it on the internet. Do some research and you'll find out a lot about it.
