Edible ID help wanted..........Pic
    #1785558 - 08/06/03 03:30 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Maybe the Two-Colored Bolete? (boletus bicolor)

Found in Virginia, on the ground near oak and pine woods (and many other genus of trees). Caps are 2" plus on the mature ones.

Flesh stains ever so slowly/slightly blue.

Still waiting for spore print.

So, are we having boletes with dinner tonight?

Any feedback is much appreciated!

Glancing at the photo, I don't think they're Boletus bicolor. That's the bad news. The good news is that they may be edible anyway.

First, get a spore print, and let us know what color it is.

Are the caps slimy or dry?

What kind of trees were they near?

Let us know.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks ToxicMan, and great to see ya! It's been a while since I've been on here, the Gem Studded Puffballs and Lapoita Proceras are jumping up all over the place!

Even had a great "Mycology" lesson when my lady brought home some of the dreaded Green Spored Lapoitas. I nailed them from ten feet away at first glance! Now even SHE can tell the difference; Thanks for all your help in the past.

Still waiting on that spore print, I only have white paper, so far no visible signs of color after an hour or two.

The caps are dry, and the flesh is very firm and kind of pale cream/yellow. I think I over reacted about the bluing even saying they bruise blue over time. Really only the stem took on a slightly darker color. The cap and pores really just "mash" and turn a darker color of yellow(?) when roughed up.

The outer skin of the cap and stem do not stain blue either when disturbed.

Trees? Oak, maple, birch, pine, cedar........et al really. But found by the gravel road between the edge of the road and the woods line (my property).

Thanks again!

Nice photo!

Its interesting, the color of the stem and cap look very similar to B. satanas. Obviously its not due to the lack of red pores.

Yea Angry,

The same color on the stem thing is what is baffling me the most too. These don?t exhibit the signs of any of the poisonous or bitter variety, but I can?t nail them with the couple of books I have either.

Thanks for the props on the pic, Toximan and the info on this site told me what to do!

Still nothing on the spore print after a couple hours on white paper.

Peace

Here's a pic after a couple hours. No dark bruises from roughing them up.

The fact that it doesn't blue when bruised and the tubes are yellow (not red or orange) means that it's not poisonous. You should taste a tiny piece to make sure it isn't bitter or peppery.

The closest match in my books is Boletus affinis, which is edible. It's also listed in some references as Xanthocomium affine (it's the same species).

Here's a page on them with some nice photos.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks again ToxicMan,

I held off eating any for the spore print, which is still barely visible on white paper after sitting all night.

In regards to the gem studded puffball, I live in the North East and these, or something that looks damn similar, have been popping up everywhere. Anyone have a positive pic of them?

Hey, incog,

That pic is definitely the gem-studded puffball. You want to select firm examples and always split them before cooking to be sure the flesh is white and consistent throughout. On the smaller ones you can split them just enough to peek inside, but leaving the two sides connected for cooking.

The biggest problem I have here is that these damned beetles attack them. They bore holes (very quickly if you watch them) just enough to make them unpalatable, and then move to the next one. They are so wasteful, it really ticks me off.

I usually batter and deep fry them and they are delicious. I read that you can saut? them in a skillet too, but they supposedly smoke more that way.

ledfethered: are you using a bowl or similar to cover the bolete while printing? if no it may help in getting more heavy prints.

btw: i beleive the beetles are laying edds in the fungi, not eating.

concretefeet,

Thanks for the reminder; no I did not use a bowl. However I think these are actually the Brick Cap Bolete (boletus sensibilis) because today I gathered some more mature ones and the pores stained immediately dark blue. In addition I could see dark spore deposits in the field where one mushroom overhangs another.

Interestingly the more immature specimens displayed only a faint bluing (hard to call it blue, but dark, and the more mature, mostly worm eaten older ones stained more readily. But even those tend to fade after sitting for a while.

Before gathering those specimens today, I brazenly saut?ed a few small slices in butter and sampled. The taste was good and I had no ill effects even after 6 hours. I think I will still avoid eating them in the future though, even though some say they can be eaten safely if cooked very thoroughly.

Peace

OK Mycologists,

Here?s another one; seems a lot like Russell?s Bolete (boletellus russellii) but has cap color and flesh staining more like the Bay Bolete (boletus badius).

Found in same area as described earlier but only the one was found, I thought it was another Brick Cap until I saw the pores. 2.5? dia. cap, 2? tall 3/8? dia stem and the spore print is looking olive. Look how theres one tinge of blue next to the reddish browning from scraping the flesh (in second pic).

Also, the second shot shows Gem Studded Puffballs that I gather regularly from the property for comparison to the pic and question earlier. I think I?ll save these to have with steak tomorrow night!

Any feedback on the new Bolete I found is much appreciated as always.

I found some beautiful Lilac-brown Boletes too, but the are reported to be too bitter to eat. Oh well, on with the foray!

Peace

Could you bruise the tubes and let us know if they blue and how long it takes?

As far as bitter boletes, go ahead and verify it in the field by taking a tiny piece from the cap and tasting it (then spit it out). The bitter ones announce themselves pretty quickly.

Happy mushrooming!

Toxicman,

As I recall the tubes bruised a little bit blue or dark, not immediate but shortly after scraping.

You can see some of this in that first picture.

Thanks for the advice on the bitter ones, that would save some carrying!

BTW, it's significant whether they're actually bruising blue or a different color. If they're actually bruising a pinkish-brown, for example, that would point the ID to very different mushrooms than bruising blue. So please be specific when specifying what color it's bruising.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks Toxicman,

I try, but specific color is hard to nail down sometimes. I would call the bruising on the tubes of this latest mushroom I'm inquiring abou,t more of a deep, semi-translucent forest green or olive; perhaps on the green/blue side.

The flesh bruised a reddish color; perhaps a little lighter than the reddish/brown of the cap color. Also, a small area adjacent to where I disturbed the flesh turned blue as well, you can see that in the pics.

What I noticed right off the bat was that the pores did not bruise blue instantly like the more mature samples of the first mushroom in this thread. Also the pores were much larger in size and more faceted than round.

It does seem that with yellow pores, and the cap not staining immediately blue (I have seen this fast bluing reaction, but those first young specimens were not reacting that way) and the spore print being olive; I don?t appear to have one of the "warning sign" boletes.

What possibilities do you think I may have here?

I tasted a fried slice of this bolete #2. It had a very mild flavor, we'll see if any reactions occur. I always remembered your plea ToxicMan; "If you are going to try a new mushroom, do it in the day time so I don?t get a call at 3AM" I believe is what you said!

One note, I stored this mushroom overnight in a moist paper towel in a container in the fridge. It stained the wet paper towel a yellowish green color.

Peace

It appears that keying it out requires a chemical test. Household ammonia should work. You need to put a drop on the cap and see what color it changes to right away, then keep watching and see if it changes to yet a different color.

Here's a pretty good key. You can fairly quickly resolve your way down to Page Six, but after that you'll need to know the reaction to ammonia to do better.

That, BTW, is the best key I know of for boletes outside of some really good books (that I don't have copies of).

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks,

I was forgetting about Mushroom Expert.com, thanks for the reminder and the link. Seems like I better gather my chemicals together!
