Yes, it has to be moist since the whole idea about putting a bottom layer is to act as a water reservoir where the shrooms can pump the water if needed. It shoudn't be saturated tho since it also helps to absorb excess water in your casing.

I wouldn't use h202 since I don't want it to be absorbed by the shrooms, even if I was told before that once absorbed, h202 breaks down.

Here's what i do. I put moist vermiculite into quart jars, seal the jar and sterilize it in the pressure cooker for an hour. Works good for me.

.fs.

if you want to use a bottom casing layer, then yes, moist. IF you want to use a bottom casing layer - many don't bother.

I got to agree with hyper read the damn FAQ. You ask like ten questions a day that are all in there. Read it from the beginning to the end twice.

fiend -- i will agree with everyone else hating on you, you ask questions that are very common, and you do so about 10 times a day......STOP IT

i didn't post on this board for 6 months, what i did do was read most of the applicable FAQ sections and TEKs. Then, i asked questions about little details, not broad subject material.....please take our advice and start reading for a bit

you are asking about things you arent even close to doing yet.
if u wanna know that badly READ THE FAQ, or DO A SEARCH
the search function is GREAT
whatever isint answered in the FAQ can be answered in SEARCH
stop being lazy...

i dont flame people for asking questions, god knows i do all the time,
i flame for lazyness
fiend always says shit, like "just give me the answer or dont post"
well fuck you man!

amen brother. me too.

i know i'm one of the worst protagonists, but lay off the newbs, guys. every so often i go overboard and end up regretting it, and later sorting it out by pm. we're all, in the end, just a bunch of mushroom enthousiasts who want to share grow tips! fiend - you're too young to hear this. go to bed!

all the newbs know they're supposed to read, seach, and ask. but if they can't ask, they gonna think we're all a bunch of stuck up wankers. and when was the last time we all did what we were supposed to do? i always make a point of doing the exact opposite, if i can, but that's cos i'm an overdrugged antiauthoritarian, and i'm British.
