Seffner, Florida (CNN) -- The ground just swallowed him up.
A Florida man fell into a sinkhole that opened suddenly Thursday night beneath the bedroom of his suburban Tampa home, calling out to his brother for help as he fell, the brother said Friday.
"I ran toward my brother's bedroom because I heard my brother scream," Jeremy Bush told CNN's "AC360."
"Everything was gone. My brother's bed, my brother's dresser, my brother's TV. My brother was gone."
Bush frantically tried to rescue his brother, Jeff Bush, by standing in the hole and digging at the rubble with a shovel until police arrived and pulled him out, saying the floor was still collapsing.
"I couldn't get him out. I tried so hard. I tried everything I could," he said through tears. "I could swear I heard him calling out."
Jeremy Bush and four other people, including a 2-year-old child, escaped from the blue, one-story 1970s-era home in Seffner, a Tampa suburb.

Am I the only one who found this incredibly sad? I live in an apartment with my only brother, I can't imagine what the guy much be going through to hear his brother screaming for help and then be unable to dig him out in time.

i wonder what they were doing hydrothermally in the area, or if any fracking was going on. could have also just been a big slip and fill. i'd be going rockhounding soon as the police tape disappears.

They were probably doing nothing. Florida is well known for naturally occurring sink holes.

it's florida, it sits atop a bunch of limestone, any sort of water can
dissolve it, an aquifer or broken sewer line are common culprits, enough of
the limestone erodes away and then the sink hole opens. atlanta had one cause
by an aging sewer that swallowed a lot of shit, when I was 14 we had one open
up on the road I lived on for the same reason and it managed to swallow a
guy's truck while he was driving. fucked him up and because it was sewer
related he made bank. they ran all new sewer down our road and filled in
around it with concrete believing it would stop the problem if it ever
happened again
