What is the verdict on the mazda protege?
    #17859238 -

Compared to the civic, is it comparable?

Lol anyone have any first hand experience with the protege; regardless of year.

Is it reliable and will it make it to 200k miles no problem

I drove a 1997 model for 8 years.  Good gas mileage, roomy, and sturdy, but plagued with myriad and expensive mechanical problems.  I traded (push/pull/drag) it in with 110K miles back in 2006 for a new Corolla.

Now I drive a Subaru Impreza.  Best. Car. Ever.

I've been driving a 1994 protege. It's got like 160k on it. They are reliable if you take care if them decently. It's had some problems but i think some of them were my fault

Dubious, at best.

Protege is fine if you don't drive like a stupid kid and intend to do literally nothing but drive point A to point B.

I hate researching cars.. such a pain in the ass. If only there was one website that I could compare cars on that was professional...

What kind of mechanical problems?

My brother is really looking for a good car that will be inexpensive overall with good gas mileage and decent looks. He was going for a tiburon and eclipse and other sporty cars but I showed him some numbers that were high (insurance costs) that scared him away from sport cars. Now he has it "narrowed" down to the protege, civic and del sol. I'm pretty sure the del sol is still a sports car though so I'm just asking for opinions of protege and civic.

I know enough about the civic though and I really just want to know about the protege.

What year of civic? I would potentially go with that if those were my options.

I'm correct in calling the del sol a sports car, right? I'm not sure because it is just a 2 seat civic to my knowledge

Depending on the year I'd probably go with the civic as well. The protoge is good but I've had a few issues. The radiator has had to he replaced,  but that was partly my fault. The clutch as well but that's one of those things that depends on your driving. I learned to drive a stick with the car though so that put wear on it. I got an oil changed in it a few weeks ago and they said they thought a head gasket was broken. But my grandpa is a mechanic so he's going to look at it, he's letting me use another car ATM. Otherwise it's a good car. Great gas mileage, drives well.

I would avoid a fourth gen (like 87-91). A few prominent and shitty electrical faults.
Gen 5 and up should be ok.

It's a compact. Sports compact if you want to be nice.
Sports car implies a design centric around emphasised engine power and manueverability. Unfortunately it's frequently misused as a marketing gimmick to sell more units.

Yeah but what does the insurance company view it as a sports car?

Taken care of properly Protege's are some of the best Cars; Especially for a Mazda too.

My buddy has a Pro, and it's got 223k miles on it. Rusty as fuck, but the car is a beast no doubt.

As it's a 2-seater and convertible, they'll still stiff you on the insurance.

The comment about the 4/5th gen was in regards to the civic, yes. The 4th gen was subject to two major potential failures. The most critical is a problem with dry solder joints in the electric relay to the fuel injector. If it happens, the car will not start.

The second, if memory serves, was a problem with the igniter running hot and degrading over time because of a faulty or badly designed heatsink.

Gen 5 civic is the nicest lookking of all of the civics imo. And the protege is the nicest looking of both. But I will tell him you recommend the civic
