READ THIS FIRST, then the post beforehand, if you see this first. i ain't arguing that Kaiser ain't Kent, anymore, Pris. you are indeed correct.

seriously, how does he kill the guy at the truck and then hop on the boat to set up Keaton?

he kills the guy on the truck and then gets on the boa to kill keaton and then
burn the russian which is how the russian managed to give the details for the
sketch... another way, look at the very end at how kent smokes the cigarette

yeah, the cigarettes, with him actually keeping the lighter and watch, kinda tells that he is Kaiser. you're right Pris. but still... i dunno, if you'll ever watch the movie again, (and i kinda doubt it) but if you do... look at all the clues pointing to the only other person at the end, THE LAWYER, can be tied to pretty much every part of the plan; if you assume that the story as is told, is true. (as in what's literally shown in the film. which shows that if Verbal/Kaiser is ALSO the trenchcoat killer, then that whole "showing" of events is made up. )

kinda makes it Hollywood magic, sadly.

most of these reason you've names as to why it couldnt be kent is exactly why
it was kent, it was so obviously him that everyone would expect it to be
someone else

perhaps this is true enough. but i gotta say, how...
Quote:
it's showing the story he told, not what really happened

is kinda cheesy, considering they could have made the lawyer (whom remains unnamed in reality) the real planner, using the "Kaiser Soza" myth with Verbal/Kaiser as a cover story. making one have to think about how the story could actually be real; just set up to prevent a random unnamed character (whom gets worked into the story with a made up alias and nothing else) controlling everything behind the scenes, from being caught. though, then it does call into question if he is Kaiser or not, which is hard to pinpoint, considering that Verbal is pointed out as Kaiser, clearly; which also makes it that Verbal IS making up that he was off the boat. which would make the whole finger pointing useless anyways. then again, though... there is no reason to think that he wouldn't do all that to make is so he could get away with his partaking in the crime too, along with the lawyer.

again, though... i think i read to much in to plotting and it seems that the story is "SHOWN" to be false, just as it is told.

(the movie would have been better if they didn't ahve to trick and blackmail the whole audience to watch scenes that actually don't really happen.)  :peyotezen:

but fine. the movie isn't as good being so obvious@! it's like you're watching make-believe (which i guess is the point) as opposed to a well-versed crime in reality. making the movie more about how brazen Kaiser is, and less about plotting a crime.

but yea, last point of contention... frok you, Pris for saying i suck for looking into all the obvious plot holes and cheese in the movie, when it's obvious to anyone who watches it, who is "pointed out" as Kaiser Soza, even before the fax comes and the coffee drops! :hulk: it's not like i didn't get it the first time i watched it, damn it!1

 i just looked to much into other outcomes being possible.

:bump2:

Verbal might Kaiser Soza, but there is a possibility that Kaiser Soza isn't running all the operations in Pakistan, such as the acquiring the goods that the other line-up crew was accused of stealing.

THAT could have very well been the Lawyer, that runs the Pakistan operations; but that is for actual discussion. i can't really say for sure. the film is pretty well established as being "solved"; even though it is pretty well open ended.

oh well, boo-urns for lack of discussion. anyone who has a brain can see that there are plotholes in the movie, and that it's open to interpretation about what the movie is actually about. whether it's about Kaiser Soza or about simply stealing money. Kaiser could just be a place holder for the story, which is a story about telling a fake story about a story that happened in order to get money. but no one wants to discuss that. the movie is already boringly solved, already, even though through half the movie, you can already tell who the mythical crime lord is... shit, when Keaton can't shoot the Emerald holder, and Verbal shoots him for Keaton... even there, and plenty of other places, you can tell that Verbal will be named as Kaiser Soza. who even cares if the police are looking for him, eventually? at first, all they are trying to figure out is who took the money... Kaiser might be hired by someone else? WHY NOT? oh well. no discussion here. BOOOOOO

now why would he have gotten into the back of the car with the guy being Kobayashi driving?

you guys fail at movies

oh and for another answer...IF Verbal is indeed Kaiser Soza (which is most probable, i admit) maybe he needed to be gotten out, so he wouldn't finger someone who might have employed HIM to begin with... spinning that it wasn't Kaiser's "plan" and it could have been someone else's. (making it so that the story about him needing to kill anyone who knew his face another placeholder for the plotline) if the movie is about showing a fake story... couldn't it be argued that the fake story isn't what the movie is about? that the Kaiser character isn't what the movie is about? Kaiser does after all take the money, in the van, after all is said and done.

but this is my last shameless thread bump. no will read this and consider it. the movie is from 1995. oh well.

I didn't read most of this thread, and while I agree that Kint (Spacey ) is Soze, I remember a few years ago I was really focused or high, but I formulated this system where it could've been Keaton.  I forget it now, I should rewatch that shit and see if I can find the system of logic that lead me there.

well, dude... i figure the movie might not even be about Soza and how he has to kill the people on the boat because his face has been seen. i mean, Soza is there... sure, he's Verbal Kent. but is the movie about that?

or is it more about stealing the money?

maybe Soza (being crazy, HAVING to kill people who's seen his face) is there, telling the story... sure. but does that mean HE PLANNED IT ALL? maybe he was employed by someone else?

A lot of movies just leave it open to your own interpretation.  I like that.

In this movie, I think it was meant to be interpreted as a thing that Soze/Kint masterminded to eliminate a threat (the guy who saw Soze).  I forget how it all played out with the money, but I was always under the impression that the assassination was the main goal.

yeah, me too, man. but this sticks out to me...

maybe the movie is about the employer of Kaiser Soza, who is more like the Myth of Kaiser then Kaiser himself?

why does the film show Kaiser off the boat, watching Keaton get shot? you're supposed to assume that he is a: making up what the film is showing. (which is kinda Hollywood smoke and mirrors; having you suspect that because he put together the story from what was in the office, that it's ok that...) b: Soza would have had to have planned to stache the hat and trenchcoat, somewhere at the boat, whilst keeping the golden watch and lighter out of sight.

ask yourself these questions. but like you said... the whole point, i find, was the leave the ending open ended. it's so realistic.

either it's about Soza getting the assassination done; or it's about an open ended story to get the money, merely involving the frontline story with the assassination. which could leave room for a background employer... another backer, if you will... whom is left unnamed (except with the use of the name on the coffee mug, during the "story") except that HE IS real. he's there. just either as Soza's accomplice... or... who Kaiser's "MYTH" is based off of.

if TL;DR

Usual Suspects took me for a spin. i had to watch it once a week ago now, after having only seen it once, like years before... and then, like two days later (a couple days ago) i watched it AGAIN with a couple friends... one whom has never seen the movie before (i was like WHAA?) and whom is really good at putting together movies.

i purposed that Kobayashi was maybe Kaiser instead of Verbal, to him... he was like oh shit, damn maybe... then he was like ehhh... i dunno.

so i took it a step further!1  maybe the myth of Kaiser Soza is used by BOTH Verbal AND Kobayashi, which implies that maybe one or the other was using the other first... or that they are BOTH using the myth, to perpetuate the crime's immensity and inconclusiveness. (in order to keep "in business")

:cookiemonster:  :boot:

this is probably the last big post, cause ya, damn...

this movie. :lolsy:

The entire story is based on information he gets at the police station. The first mention of Soze comes from the cops. spacey just creates the character around the name. Spacey is the mastermind, the name is just a label he deflects.

I think the "usual suspects" refers to the cops getting the characters they expect,

but how does he plan it all? how does he keep the trenchcoat and hat, without cluing everyone in RL, off? how does he put the cops to all the crew to get them in the line-up? isn't he a criminal? why would he have that ability? it's implied that the Lawyer, helps him, right?

so he's outside of the "made-up" story. means there is more to the Lawyer then is let on in the movie. which leaves room for interpretation.

I just assumed he was able to do all that because he is Kobayashi, he is crime lord numero uno, I'm sure there are plenty of corrupt police officers and shit to choose from, to give a bunch of money and be like "make this happen"

hey it's all good. glad you popped in. (oohohohoh)

i mean, i am going to bed soon. this thread is pretty much for reading purposes at this point. i was just raving alot about what possibilities there are in interpreting the things in the movie that they DON'T show you. plus, what they DO show you. (Verbal is off the boat the whole movie... you have to assume, with it's reveal that the story was being made up by him, that he might have been on the boat, BUT they show otherwise. smoke and mirrors.)

it's possible that it can be as convoluted as it being all planned by Verbal himself. but if you're not confusing the names (Kobayashi isn't Verbal Kent [Kevin Spacey], Kobayashi is the Lawyer) then i agree with your conclusion.

haha, in my opinion, it could be either or. BOTH conclusions make sense. that's what is making wonder... sweeettt.

The film's title references a line from the movie 'Casablanca'.

good. i recommend it, and i recommend that you keep in mind that i watched it on SHROOMS DUUUDE so it might be crazier to me, when i watched it, BUT it's GREAT.

it's about a drug taking, drinking actor & poet/writer (correction, they are both actors) going around Britland dealing with being in Slumsville, Shittown. it's shitty and rat-like, and awesome.

it's up your alley. BTW, if you watch teh movie, keep in mind that the actor (Withnail) is a tee-totaller. he doesn't really drink, but... he plays an excellent drunk.

minute youtube scene from the beginning, if you want a preview of the insanity.
