Help! I bought a pressure cooker and dont know how to use it

I found a LARGE pressure cooker at a garage sale today and purchased it for $5.00 cash.
The lady said that it was her mothers and she had no idea how to use it but that there was nothing wrong with it.

It is a Kook-kwick #19.

It has a pressure gage and a bleed valve. It also has another valve type device on the lid that I have no idea what to do with.

Anybody got any suggestions or experience with this device?

Whatever you do I wouldn't recommend experimenting with it...my friend bought two pressure cookers and he forked out some good cash for the first one-used but it had no manual and he was deathly afraid of it blowing up so he bought one WITH a manual and now has reduced fear of exploding pressure cookers. My only advice is to NOT FUCK WITH IT until you're sure the manual or information you have matches your cooker. Unless you're brave.

There's pressure cooker advice in the FAQ, but like Mr Sleep said, experiment at your own risk... i bought a pc without a manual and just worked it out... just pay close attention to it and don't be stupid :grin:

After looking it over closely I have decided it is missing a rubber seal and a regulator weight.
I can manufacture both easily enough.
I will have to dissassemble the weighted regulator valve and calculate the weight needed to "pop off"at 20psi by finding the vale area and working the problem from there.
The seal will be easy.

Unless anybody knows of a place to get spare parts!

Hmm... from what I could find, your cooker was sold by Sears Roebuck & Co between 1924 and 1942. I couldn't find much else about it...

my pc is a 1979 presto, and the "modern day instruction manual" is from 1959, it works great!

You really think your up to "manufacturing" a regulator weight? Surely if you get it wrong you could risk your pressure cooker exploding? Good luck...

I guess I'm lucky to have had a grandmother and mother that use dpressure cookers on a regular basis while I was growing up. It all just seems like common sense to me. I've never once wondered how to use a pressure cooker.

dude spend 50$ and get a brand new 14quart pressure cooker by presto.

why the fuck would u want to sit there and try to cut metal to the right size...
