I just saw on the news yesterday a story about cops monitoring facebook accounts looking for parties where underage drinkers might be and crashing them to arrest people.

What do you guys think about this?

I think privacy is an illusion and a lie. Once you realize this, it's kinda hard to get too worked up over stories like this.

anyone can intercept a cordless or cell phone signal because it's not a direct wire connection but a radio signal

I don't know why anyone would expect to have privacy on facebook. Posting a party invite where underaged kids will be drinking is incredibly stupid especially when you make it so that it can be seen by law enforcement officers. Phones are a little bit of a different issue but I think most average people have nothing to worry about in regards to phone privacy.

scanner, there is no expectation of privacy via radio, it's like expecting keep
something a secret by shouting it through a megaphone

Sure, but how practical is it to do anything useful with an intercepted digital cellphone signal? Don't they encrypt them?

Well yeah but unless you're running a huge drug op, planning a major crime, being stalked, or dealing with terrorists I really don't see why anyone would be interested in listening to the average person's phone conversations.

They may not have an interest in you specifically, but with the blessing of the phone company it would be fairly trivial (with a sufficiently large budget) to just save copies of every single phone conversation directly off their computer network, and store them in data centers for later perusal. Automatically translating it all to text with reasonable accuracy for keyword searches is fairly straightforward as well. Nobody needs to devote any time to listening to anything if it hasn't already been tagged as suspicious, but if you later get identified as someone of interest then they can go back to your earlier conversations that are already on file.

encryption can be cracked, in the case of cell phones since one phone needs
to communicate with millions of others as well as land lines there is no
actual encryption. here's one example

From what I understood, he is emulating a phone tower in order to fool nearby phones into communicating with it without encryption. They make it sound like they ordinarily would be using an encrypted connection. Cool demo, but it seems like that technique might attract FCC attention if he had done it without notifying them (as opposed to just passively intercepting signals, which presumably would be undetectable by authorities.) I didn't watch the video, does that setup pass on calls to the real phone network or what?
