Canned Corn Growing!

I am not sure if this is a new idea or not... I think I have some recollection of someone mentioning it a while back when I was just starting. Is it possible to grow mushrooms on canned corn? This would eliminate the need to PC or soak your corn, make sterility very VERY easy (just inoculate a can after you drained it) and provide a totally novel way to cultivate.

Seems like it would be too wet, even after draining it. It would also need to be drained in a sterile environment !

Hi I tried canned corn about 4 months ago.
Some days, before the idea to take canned corn came to my mind, i saw a TV documention, about how canned corn is produced. In TV they said, they use only corn and water in the process, and absolutly no additives, and that the finished result is contamination free, due to the the high pressure cook boiling)
So i made 8 jars with canned corn. Even After 6 weeks not the slightest sign, of any myzel or even any contamination (After that time i discarded them) I tried again, after that with normal popcorn, and the jars went fine, with fast colonisation
My conclusion is, that they DO ADD some sort of preservation/germ killing stuff in the productuion prosess, because absolutly nothing was growing.
(But for honesty, i have to add, that i bought the cheapest special offer brand of canned corn (probably imported from ukraine ) But on the can label also clearly was marked, that the corn was manufactured only with corn and water, and that NO additives were added)
Hope this helps.

houston, we have lift-off. it gives me great pleasure to announce that mycellia has now, at about 6 days since multi-spore inoculation, become visible in 3 jars of hominy. that means it works. spores will germinate, and mycellia grow, on plain hominy right out of the can. that's a pretty stunning developement, in my opinion. the patches are still a bit small for my crappy webcam to show clearly but we'll have pix in another day or two.

we used yellow hominy, the cheap generic stuff, had 14% sodium content. we just opened the can, drained off the fluid, dumped it in a colander, rinsed under tap water, put 1/4 c. of verm in the bottom of a qt jar, dumped in the hominy [took 4 cans to make 3 quarts] applied a double layer of post office tyvek, screwed on the rim, covered with foil, and steamed 1 hour. no pressure was used. each jar was inoculated with almost 3 cc of ralphster's blue meanies. jars were incubated at room temp, which meant high 80's, to mid 90's. growth is visible at 6 days.

lol i'll confess to not being fond of eating hominy grits, but the shrooms aren't as picky. so 'll let the shrooms eat the hominy, then i'll eat the shrooms. works out well. and you might try it, colonized hominy, with some milk and sugar, magic breakfast cereal.

here's my crappy pic, kinda hard to spot but the mycellia is now roughly covering 5-10% of the entire hominy jar. the other two hominy jars are coming along nicely as well, but the verm is more spread-out, making it harder to spot the mycellia.

Nice. I did read the hominy thread, it seems like it is a little slower colonizing than popcorn but obviously the prep work is almost non existant... well it is non existant other than PC'ing./

Did I read right ? You used "canned" hominy ? Cant hominy be bought in the dried , bulk form ? I would think it less likely to rot before myc can dominate it . More work , but maybe safer ? LOL LOL FLASHBACK ......... I had to eat that crap as a kid ........ bout as yummy as Hawaian POI ........ewcccccckkkkkkkkkkkk ! I was taught fresh was better than instant crap .......! As a kid that is ........... LOL ! Keep us posted on your results .

there's NO reason, yet, to believe that canned hominy is any slower than other grains. cubester only made 1 hominy cake, a pint, and never shook it up and it still finished in ~2 weeks. ours looks good so far, other than the 6 days to germinate, which might be spore-related as we used older syringes. i'd estimate that at the rate i see the mycellia growing, i'll proly shake gently once tommorrow and it should finish soon after. but we'll see. btw, no need tp pc, it's sterile right out of the can. so you can just boil jars like pf tek.

you read right. i'm talking plain canned hominy. right off the grocery store shelf. just open a can, rinse, drain, dump in jar, steam 1 hour. spawn as easy as you'll ever get it. we even have a few going right in the can, no jars needed. another success report just in. Quote:

just in from cubester, his 1st hominy cake has begun to fruit. not overly impressive i'll admit but the guy's a newbie, it should have been cased no doubt. still, this proves cubensis will fruit on canned hominy.
