Want to know my solution?  I'm sure no one does because I'm a bleeding heart liberal but I'll share anyways: slash work time in half. This will ensure everyone is employed and will prepare our economy for the exponentially increasing amount of automation we're already seeing that eliminates some of the need for a labor force. In their new found free time, Americans can focus more on scientific, academic and creative pursuits thus bettering our populous overall, and hopefully generating some more critical thinkers, rather than having everyone constantly slaving away most days of the year at poorly paying jobs that don't contribute anything very meaningful and most people hate anyway. :yesnod:

Raise wages, lower prices? Nothing actually costs as much as we pay for it. We decide the value of an item, the value of labor, we construct our own economy.

It's going to keep happening with the exponential automation of labor, so we're going to need to figure out a way to make it so everyone can still contribute. I say we slash work time for all people, including company owners and the rich men who run everything.

People one hundred years ago were afraid of automation and now there are jobs and industries that did not exist one hundred years ago. I have faith that similar trends will continue on into the future.

Seriously man. Tell me your plan to fix the US economy. I'd love to know what policies you would change, what cuts you would do, what revenues you would raise, etc.

I'd love to see heavy cuts to nonessential services like federal pensions,
endowments and grants for so many corporations under the guise of arts or
science or what ever silly excuse they use to piss away federal funds. to
raise taxes when the the rest of the nation is having to live on a tighter
budget is certainly not going to fix things, cuts to the budget need to be
made, very serious and deep cuts and they should start with everything that
requires 3x as much money to operate as it pays out each year

OMG how could I forget about federal pensions... Fuck yes, slash them in half. Are federal employees in the US paid more than private sector employees? and do they do half the work of a private sector employees? and do they take 3 25 minute breaks a day with full benefits and stuff? Cause thats Canada. We've been trying for decades to fuck em up and bring them back to reality but their unions are too strong.

As for the federal grants, I know a few people that wouldn't have what they have if they didn't receive a grant to start them up. its true that some people waste it, but in the end grants are venture capitalism investments. You take 1 million, split it up in 10, you give them away knowing that 9 of them will fail and hope that 1 of them will bring back 1.1 million or more. That's how most capitalist countries have been built. Banks don't loan out money anymore cause they're scared. If the government stops doing it too, then how will small people receive big loans?

As for the rest of the cuts, I'm not too informed of all the government projects, but where would you find them. I would assume that congress combed through them all by now... "assume".

Company owners will keep working as much as they want, they own the place, they do what they want. Automation is still years away. We still need workers. Plus automation will require maintenance and human supervision.

If you ever find a way to solve that problem, please tell us how you did it. The government has been trying everything short of firing everybody (which they can't of course...)

You guys have 50 fucking states. Some states need to unite together to cut the admin cost of government... It must be so expensive to have 50 departments doing the same exact thing in every state...

Federal grants are an example of an expenditure that may not have an immediate benefit (e.g. scientific research).  However, it can produce benefits later on, often for the private sector.  Educational grants can be viewed similarly.  If you cut education spending, you may save money, but a country consisting of an uneducated workforce may not be beneficial in the long run.

I'm talking about a cultural shift towards working less overall for all people, including company owners. Automation is here right now in many industries and it's a large reason we're seeing so much unemployment. Automation today is much more advanced than years ago and people are needed less and less for labor jobs that can be automated. Automation requires little maintenance and human supervision compared to the amount of people it puts out of a job. (I think it's a good thing that automation puts people out of the job because it allows for a future where people don't have to bust their asses just to make chump change and ideally, in my mind, a future where a person's life is not controlled entirely by the profession they are required to work just to scrape by.)

the problem comes down to the "ownership" itself... in which anybody can own any business or invest in them without any real knowledge or skill in which the company provides their good or service.  this is creating greed corporations with CEO's that don't know half of what they should about the business they are dealing in and making decisions based on instant profit and long term investments instead of progressing in techniques

It will be painful in the transition stages but in the end I think more jobs than ever will be avalible. I think trying to limit technological advancement for fear of all the jobs vanishing is foolish we are not amish after all.

I understand what you mean, but lets take Europe, all the countries where work hours were low are now on the verge on declaring bankruptcy.

Automation is great, but we need to find a way to employ people. If automation takes over quickly, only engineer and high tech people will have jobs in this country.

Sometimes they are more fun. This time your humorous proposal was responded to in kind.

Yeah I fully agree with you, I think we need to prepare for these sorts of large shifts in the types of employment available though to limit the possible initial negative impact on our economy.

That's why I think we should raise wages and cut working times in half, that way automation taking over isn't a problem. Our economy is still based on capitalism, the employment of the laborer and the idea that everyone should be working all the time to "earn their keep" however with increasing automation we're going to see a problem with these ideas and I think this is a large reason we're all having economic problems right now. Our systems are based on a time where technologies that are within our reach now could never have been considered. I think perhaps it's time we stop relying on age-old tradition and work towards something more modern.

how can you demonize "progressivism" of our economy?  without progress we are fucked...  if we stay economically "conservative" while our technology increases at an exponential rate we will in turn be dragged into an even worse state of our current economic situation
