i'm considered dependant, can i still get student loans to pay for all tuition?
    #7985651 - 02/06/08 05:37 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

I changed the original topic because Dr. Seuss answered my question, and I have another:

My status is 'dependent' for recieving student loans. I don't live with my parents, and only 1 of them has a job (but still doesn't make much money).

Can I still get my full tuition payed for with loans?

Apply and see what happens. If they say no, then go talk to the head of the dept you are interested in, or to the dean of the school you are interested in, and beg. If you pester them enough to show that you are serious, without getting annoying, they will probably let you in on "academic probation" terms. (i.e. you have to make good grades, or they drop you at the end of the semester)

Community college credit, especially with decent grades, will go a long ways towards helping. Good SAT/ACT scores help as well. Finally, they tend to be a bit more forgiving as you get older.

Ya, a GED doesn't look good, but if you get some community/tech school classes under your belt with good grades I bet you will do fine. Just get some of your general requirements out of the way.

Thanks for the info man

Edit: In reguards to my question about student loans. It seems that anybody can get enough loans to cover tuition. Federal loans have lower interest rates, but may not cover the cost of full tuition.

I realize that it's something I need to research very in-depth before making any decisions.

The school should have a financial aid dept. Go talk to them, as they are paid to know the answers to your questions and will be better able to help you than any of us. This will also be beneficial if you end up having to get the help of a dept head or dean... it goes towards the "show that you are serious" about an education.

loans dont pay for tuition. You borrow money to pay, and then have to pay back + interest. so yes, you can take out enought to offset the coast of your education.
As a person with over 80K of school debt,(ive since reduced to 27k) research, grants, and grade awards (free money) because those loans will be due, and they will be waiting for you after you graduate.

And beware of the School Financial Aid dept - they already have been proven to offer loans based on the kick backs the school will receive, not necessarily the best deal for the student

- so DO A LOT OF RESEARCH. Ask around, search the internets, apply for grants and merit awards. Look into the school you want to apply to and ask if they have any grants or anything to help pay for your school BESIDES loans.
and good luck.

You can ALWAYS get your tuition paid with loans, provided you don't have a bankruptcy. Loans are profit based, so of course someone will lend you some money for college.

What you need to do is go to work until you declare yourself independent. The government will pay for your ENTIRE tuition with FAFSA, federal financial aid. You will NEVER have to pay them back, it's all grant money. Try to avoid loans for an undergraduate, the degree is virtually worthless unless you plan to be an engineer or a CPA. Take out loans for grad school.

Seuss, Oracle of Delphi, kriminalelement, thank you guys for your help. I'm researching this in-depth, and I want to make the best decision for my future.

I will talk to the correct departments of that school. I will definitely get as much of the free money as I can as opposed to grants.

Again, thanks!!!
