5HTP can help, but a healthy diet helps more.

How about the malatonin? My friend suggested taking two before going to sleep alongside the 5HPT to help me recover?

been in the nutritional supplement industry for a while, and, as mentioned, 5HTP and l-tryptophan are you're best bet, at least in the US. The forms you're going to find at pharmacies or regular markets are usually crap, so you'll want to go online or to a health food store. My suggestion for the best prices and effectiveness is NOW brand: a link to a suggested l-tryptophan product is here

when taking amino acids, it's best to take them on an empty stomach so they don't get the chance to combine with other aminos to create proteins and have more of a chance to affect you on their own (IME). also, they shouldn't be taken for more than 3 weeks w/o a week off. 500 mg's in capsule form every 8 hrs is my usually suggested regimen. l-tryptophan is sedative, 5HTP not so much. I suggest taking the l-tryp at night and 5HTP during the day.

Melatonin does work for some as a sedative, but it's best used as method to re-set your sleeping cycles. You should take the same dose (MAXIMUM of 3mg's) at the same time of night and go to bed within a half hour after for a week or two if the goal is to reset your circadian rhythms. For a sedative, a combination of 400 mg's magnesium, a dose of tryptophan, and a couple droppers worth of HerbPharm brand PharmaKava and a couple droppers full of valerian should definitely do the trick. all of these things (IME) seem to lose their effectiveness if taken regularly over long periods. try to go 2-3 weeks on, 1-2 weeks off if possible.

And eat healthily. if all you do is pop pills and eat crap, you're going to continue to feel like crap. And stay off the SSRI's (prescription anti-depressants,) unless you're experiencing suicidal depression. they usually cause more trouble than they['re worth.

5-HTP.  L-Tryptophan converts to 5-HTP anyway, but some people have trouble with the metabolizing process, so 5-HTP is a better bet.

A lot of people have a problem with metabolizing things into neuro's because they have vitamin deficiencies from 1) Drinking too much alcohol 2) Not eating right 3) Taking drugs 4) disease.  B vitamins are coenzymes for most metabolic process including serotonin production.  Especially B-6.

I take 5htp/valerian root/b6 capsules sold at cvs (cvs brand) as a sleep aid.
Then I heard someone say in chat they took B complex vitamins for depression and I decided 'what the hay, I'll try that too'.
I definitely notice that I'm less of a bitch now :whatyougonnado:

true. People often have trouble coenzymating supplemental forms of the b-vitamin family as well, so p5p form of B6 and methylcobalamin for B12 are suggested, as they are already coenzymated.

edit to add: siblingual, (under the tongue,) forms are usually the most effective.

Micro dosing the mushrooms should give you the boost and still be functioning normally. Also, you do not need to worry about random  drug testing.

5htp cause cause an unnecessary  build up of serotonin in the body.
This buildup isn't even where it's supposed to be, it's just around your body.
which can lead to heart problems and the like.

Not sure if that was ever proven or if it's a hypothesis. But from what I understand, there's no reason to take 5-HTP when there's L-Tryptophan. L-Tryptophan is the immediate precursor to 5-HTP and is a part of our diet (it's a type of protein). L-tryptophan is what we've evolved to consume. Technically, that doesn't make 5-HTP any less than L-tryptophan, but in light of what you pointed out, L-Tryptophan is a safer bet.

BTW, MAOI + Phenylalanine or phenethylamine (sequel to the former) is supposed to give you a dopamine rush. But start with very low doses. Apparantly this is a combo you can easily overdose on.

Eat a banana in the morning/afternoon. So much of this has to do with diet.

Take vitamins B6, B12, D3 and C.

Drink as much water as you can every day.

I've been on this regimen for over 10 days and feel the best I ever have. There is no need to take 5HTP.

FYI, I was considering SSRIs before I researched and implemented this regimen...

I found and read this book and it blew my mind:

Don't take cyanocobalamin, the most common form of B12. And, consequently, do not take any multivitamins that contain cyanocobalamin. And algae products (i.e. spirulina) may be best to avoid as the B12 they contain may be bad as well; and do not take any multi-nutrient products that contain these algaes (they're increasingly being incorporated into products).

I looked at the two links.. No actual scientific proof - only pseudo science. I don't see what is wrong with cyanocobalamin.

6. I bet you didn't know that chili can make you happy did you? Chilies can cause your bodies endorphin and serotonin levels go up. Sometimes significantly. The capsicum is the trigger that can cause your bodies endorphin and serotonin levels to go up. And this can make your mood better and make you feel better and you get all this from a bowl of chili.

Capsaicin is an interesting drug.  It has actually been found to be quite addictive.  Which is why people who enjoy spicy foods go for hotter and hotter foods.  I love eating spicy peppers.  :crazy2:

Quote:
It is said that the burning sensation from capsaicin is addictive. It is also said that one becomes "conditioned" to this sensation. The reason is that during the eating of chiles, a chemical in the chile pepper called Capsaicin, irritates the trigeminal cells. These are pain receptor cells located throughout the mouth, the nose and the throat. When your body's nerves feel the pain induced by the chemical on these cells, they immediately start to transmit pain messages to your brain. Your brain receives these signals and responds by automatically releasing endorphins (the body's natural painkiller). These endorphins kick in and act as a painkiller and at the same time, create a temporary feeling of euphoria, giving the chile pepper eater, a natural high.
The body's other responses include increasing the heart rate to increase the metabolism, increasing salivation in order to try and refresh the mouth and by increasing the rate of sweating by the body. Your nose also starts to run and the gastrointestinal tract slips into high speed. Hot & spicy food lovers soon begin to crave these feelings and are soon hooked.

Sometimes the best solution to a problem is to not have the problem. I will be the first to recommend a non-pharmacological remedy. try meditation. On Happiness.

more thoughts about happy things =
more neurons for happy thoughts =
more happiness for you and your neurotransmitter deficient brain.
