Help boosting serotonin levels
    #17313660 -

Other than exercise, which I can assure you in this point in time, I'm in no fit state to do, is there anything out there that I can buy over the counter to help boost my serotonin levels? I've heard a chemical being mentioned before but I cant for the life of me remember it's name. Not only that but I'm not even sure if its legal.

Anyway, a little help would be appreciated.

Indeed, it is connected with one of the many essential amino acids, tryptophan (which can be found in many kinds of foods e.g. almonds nuts, turkey, banana, etc) which in turn gets synthesized by our body to a chemical named 5-hydroxytryptophan or 5-HTP, which is needed for production of serotonin and melatonin.

You can buy both 5-htp and l-tryptophan over the counter. These will both convert into serotonin into your body. BE CAREFUL! I was taking l-tryptophan for a week or two and I stopped it and got NASTY withdrawal symptoms. You need to treat them like you do SSRIs, with respect and weaning off when you want to stop.

My understanding is that 5-htp can't pass the blood brain barrier.

Personally i haven't noticed any difference when taking it.

5-HTP and L-tryptophan are poor recommendations. L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid and should be taken in standard doses -- either through food or supplements.

I recommend inositol. There's a study that backs it as wel as the testimonial of a doctor. I don't have the information off hand though.

Well I contacted my local pharmacy and they told me that they couldn't sell anything frltm over over the counter to help boost sertonin levels. She said I'd need a prescription which I found to be quite surprising. The only thing she could recommend was a multivitamin which I thought was useless advice.

Is that the case? Is it worth me phoning back up and asking them about inositol or even L-tryptophan? Surely though, you would have thought the pharmacist would have known about them?

How come you feel the need to boost serotonin levels?

MDMA will increase it a treat, 6-apb too....

But i take it your just abit down or partied out so maybe instead of searching for a quick chemical fix for this in a pharmacy just take some time off, do some mediation.

Chill out and give your brain the chance to rest and re-adjust its chemistry naturally.

:goodluck:

Has anyone any experience in 5HTP or Malatonin? My mate just helped me out with a fair few and said they should do the trick nicely! From what I've heard, 5HTP builds up serotonin and the melatonin is a good sleeping aid.

Any thoughts?

5HTP can help, but a healthy diet helps more.
