Let's Update the FAQ List of What's Found Where...

If you have updates you'd like made (or proposed) to this list in the FAQ, please post them in this thread.

I'll start with an update for Colorado:

Psilocybe caerulescens
Panaeolus subbalteatus
Gymnopilus spectabilis
Gymnopilus sapineus
Pluteus salicinus
Gerronema fibula
Conocybe cyanopus (already on list)

This list is based on a list I have of species known from this state, compared with this list of active species from mjshroomer's site. I don't have a record of Conocybe cyanopus from Colorado, but it's on the list already, so I'm leaving it there.

Those of you who know your shrooms, let's hear about what you know occurs in your state/province/whatever. All you guys down under, here's your chance to get your stuff added to the list.

We're not really interested in hearing about Amanita muscaria here. Stick to the species from mj's list. If you think his list needs an update, contact him.

I'll wait until the thread dies down, then make an update to the FAQ.

And maybe mention the 2 new species yet to be named or published that grow here.


Louisiana:

Florida:

Add Panaeolus subbalteatus to the list and maybe mention an active Panaeolus favoring lawns growing in south florida yet to be identified, the one GGreatone has been finding.

South Carolina:(not even listed in the faq)

Panaeolus subbalteatus
Gymnopolis spectabilis

Before I go any further, most every state needs to have Panaeolus subbalteaus added to it.

Yes and i also believe Amanita muscaria var. muscaria grows in north Florida. 

And i may have another psychoactive Gymno to add to the list for florida but im waiting for mr mushrooms to look at them under the microscope and get back to me  :grin:

I realize this is a very rare species, but P. tampanensis has supposedly  been found in Mississippi.
And of course, Florida. Like once.
Of course I'm confident once GG starts looking for this species, he'll probably find an acre or two of tamps growing, with sclerotia as big as watermelons................ :grin:

Even though it's not a common species throughout the state, you should probably add P.cubensis to North Carolina.It grows in the eastern part, near the coast.

does anybody know where the Psilocybe azurescens and Gymnopilus luteofolius grow in new mexico? The mycological society down there doesn't mention them on any of their foray find records I don't think...

Yeah, lots of suspicious entires indeed. Like how to my knowledge Ps. caerulescens has only been found once time by murril in 1923 in alabama. The faq lists them as being found in almost every southern gluf costal state.

My list is an official copy of the list of species identified at the annual CMS Mushroom Fairs here in Denver from 1974 - 1991. The majority of the IDs on the list were by Alexander Smith.

I don't have specifics on any of the individual species. There is always the possibility that there was a misidentification, whether by Smith or somebody else. Of course, that's true with any ID, by anybody, anywhere.

Where can I get a copy of A. Smiths list?
If I'm not mistaken, Smith once published a good color photo of P caerulipes, that seems to have disappeared into obscurity. That would be nice to view if you have any info on it.

I think you misinterpreted what I said.

The list is from the Colorado Mycological Society, and lists every species officially identified at the annual Mushroom Fair we have each year in August. The list covers the years 1974 - 1991. As it happens, the majority of those years the person we got to come in and identify mushrooms was Alexander Smith.

I believe Larry Renshaw would be the copyright holder on the list, since I think he compiled it. I can check with him on copyright issues, and, if he says it's OK, I'll scan a copy in and convert it to text. Then I can get a copy to anybody who wants one, although I don't think it would be very useful for people outside Colorado. It consists of just a list of mushrooms, with no other information.

Yes, I thought it was a general list for the U.S., not just for a specific state.
If I ever go to Colorado I'd definitely like such a list. Also a list of locations for all the hot looking, horny women for the state would be nice to have if I'm ever there :grin: If there's no such list available, you have your work cut out for you TM....................hehehe.........you better get busy :wink:

P. caerulescebns does not grow in Colorado.

Stamets wrote of P. azures in New Mexico and other states and countries. These were transplansts which fgrew for a few seasons and bnever returned or spread into other areas.

Michael Beug's recently wrote me of the site with his images of Conocybe smithii and agreed the image in his site is not Conocybe smithii.

Yes P. caerulescens was discovered and first botanically recorded fromHuntsville alabama. It was not then renoknown until its discoverey amongst the Mazatecs of Oaxaca by the AWassons and Heim inthe middle 1050s.

ANd again while P. subbalteatus is common, very few people ever find it.

I hate to sound like a solicitor, but if anyone is inclined to more specifically report their findings, it would be a tremendous help to the cause of the MUSHFind database, which I've just put into the beta phase this morning.

At least take a look and give me some advice. After all, I'm not an avid hunter by any means, so your experience and preferences are important. I just think this has a lot of potential

Psilocybe caerulescens is listed in an old magic mushroom book I have as being found throughout the Southern U.S.,growing on sugar cane mulch, and in red clay.
Of course, I've never seen it, and have never seen anyone from the South post pics here of it.
Maybe the confusion dealing with this species, Psilocybe caerulescens, is due to the fact that other psilocybes were found, and were misidentified as that species. For example: P. tampansis, caerulipes, mammillata, atlantis, and weilii have been found in the Southern U.S. The old mushroom book I have doesn't even list these latter species at all. Of course the book came out in the early '70's.
Until a few years ago, there was very little info on the psilocybes, and only a small number of species were listed anyway.

For what it's worth, "Texas Mushrooms" by Susan and Van Metzler doesn't include Gymnopilus luteofolius or Psilocybe caerulipes in their book on mushrooms found in Texas. This may need to be updated in the FAQ or perhaps it is oversight on the authors' parts. Hard to tell...I've never seen them, but that doesn't mean they're not here.

There have been p. cubensis found in southern West Virginia. I haven't found them myself, but have seen some that friends have found.

Montana-

so far I personally have found Panaeolus Subbalteatus, an unknown active panaeolus growing from a beaver dam, and gymnopilus spectabilis

I have heard reports of P. Pelliculosa sightings in Northwest Montana. Also I have seen picked specimens of a bluing conocybe, probably smithii. They were found growing in an alder bog in southwest Montana.

I have found some unidentified inactive pasture and lawn psilocybes in Montana, as well. If anyone else wants to destroy this lack of information on Montana actives, then post your MT finds

Soon I will post pics of the unidentified active panaeolus, and the subs I have found in MT
